Pomfret and Westminster
Mid-Atlantic schools seem not to get their due. Guess it’s because the rich parents in Darien, CT don’t want the traffic hassle of driving south of the City.
@GMTplus7 that’s a bit gratuitously nasty for a 5 year old thread , no?
That’s not nasty; that’s just traffic congestion reality. A large number of DS’s well-heeled classmates are from Darien.
Hmm as opposed to the non rich parents who just love traffic congestion…
Non-rich parents have to prioritize FA package over traffic congestion.
How nice that the largest FA budgets for the most kids and the need blind admissions are all north of the NJT. I get that FA packages are a huge part of where people can go, I was only responding to your totally unneccessary rich Darien comment. It was off topic and sounds bitter. Many parents, be they rich or poor and Darien or not want to keep their kids geographically somewhat closer to them
Apparently this thread still has legs, despite the protests of teenage Thread Nazis.
There is indeed a larger concentration of richly endowed prep schools north of the NJT, but there are also a significant number of richly endowed Mid-Atlantic schools that also give generous FA. And they tend to have slightly more forgiving admit rates for comparable SSAT scores.
The title of this thread is UNDERATED PREP SCHOOLS. For S2’s prep school admission cycle (last year), i crunched all the numbers, looking at endowment per student, SSAT scores, SAT scores for graduating seniors, admit rate, FA, etc, and posted a number of lists of schools that emerged as hidden opportunities. Start with this list, then find more lists as you scroll thru the thread:

I’d like to highlight Mercersburg as a Mid-Atlantic school which recently received a whopping donation to its endowment. It’s attractive endowment figures where not yet available when i crunched the data.
FWIW, i have nothing against Darien, CT. Before DS enrolled in BS, i never even heard of Darien.
^or Copenhagen
Copenhagen as in Denmark?
And, FWIW, I kind of do, if I could have my way I would choose a school for my child that does not have a huge population of kids from Darien or Greenwich. If i wanted them to be going to school with them I would have moved to the suburbs 10 years ago
^^as in dip, not Denmark…
Even though the Darien/ Greenwich quip hit a little close to home, I burst out laughing. FWIW- Many kids from these towns get out of dodge and go to BS because they’re very cool/super nice parents have made it their goal to save them. Ha!
( And we’re usually the fun table at Parents Weekend )
Ha @photographermom Mostly tongue in cheek but the irony of sending my child away from NYC to gain diversity of experience and backgrounds so he can make friends with everyone from Fairfield county might be just too much for me! I am sure you are very fun.
Putnam Science Academy
couldn’t agree more, @PhotographerMom, I’ve gotten to know a few of these parents at SAS, and they seem to be truly “liberated” once they cross the Delaware River! Hardy drivers, they’re ready to laugh and enjoy themselves after the long breather that is southbound on the NJTPKE, post-Exit 8 construction. Their kids have good relationships at the school, too.
Not “underrated”, but I find it interesting that Middlesex isn’t discussed more on these boards. St. George’s, St. Mark’s, Brooks…
Maumee Valley!
