Motorcycle

So I'm a freshman and I'm thinking of getting a motorcycle next year to get around campus. My parents think it's dangerous but I think it would be fun.

Thoughts/opinions?

I plan on doing the same thing. I've wanted to ride for a long time and I've been working and trying to save up for one that would be affordable. As with any beginning rider, make sure you take the MSF training course. Also make sure that you will have a place to keep it as many colleges provide NO form or storage for any type of vehicle if you're a freshman.

Don't get a crotch rocket. They will just make it seem like you are trying to hard to be a bad ass. Now a Vespa...

im not gonna get a scooter lol. its between a car and a sport bike...and i think motorcycle has higher gas mileage, more feeling of control, and idk just seems like it would be fun.

motorcycles are easily stolen, two guys come and pick it up and throw it onto a truck and drive away, easily done in 20 seconds

I was recently in the market for a car. Get a 2008 (left over) Nissan Sentra, you can get a good deal on them, and they look sharp in black. Most of all they have good gas mileage.

dont motorcycles weigh ~500 lbs? i see what you mean but does it happen frequently?

2008 sentra doesnt look too bad. its just...i want to do something fun and exciting, and unique..wouldnt college be a good time to do that?

this guy in one of my french classes had a motorcycle; everyone thought it was pretty sexy haha

motorcycle is a good way to transport your stuff home at the beginning/end of the semester/year?

no but my dad has a truck

riding a motorcycle is very dangerous. I wouldn't even think about riding unless you have naturally amazing motor skills as well as acute reflexes. I have two friends who ride, one who moto-crossed for several years as a kid and also competed in auto-x (in his car). When he got his ducati 748s he tracked that as well.

The other friend I have who rides has AMAZING motor skills--I've sat shotgun in his car on a couple of track days and he could EASILY go semi-pro. he's got natural talent flowing out of his ears.

the shocker is that both of those guys have dropped their bikes just driving around the streets, and scraped themselves up pretty badly in the process--but they survived.

i can think of at least 2 other people who were friends of friends who weren't so lucky, and lost their lives at a really early age.

but yeah, if you've had experience competing in the SCCA, competitive karting as a kid, moto-cross, etc etc, then i would maybe think about a bike.

otherwise you'll be a lot safer with 4 wheels. plus theres tons of fun economical cars out there.

oh also keep in mind that as good as you are on a bike, you're safety can easily be compromised by the car drivers around you.

Saving $20 a month on gas is great until that time you get rear-ended by some other college kid that's distracted by talking on their cell phone.

Of course a bike is fun. But of course it's waaaay more dangerous. It is also less practical. Does it snow or rain a lot where you are going to school?

no, but I live in atlanta so lots of traffic.

i guess only scooters are stolen more often than motorcycles since scooters are way lighter

i bet three guys could lift a 500 lb motorcycle

i got a crotch rocket and I am a badass so....

yea..it would be ba. only thing is it isnt very safe...

which is why ive been looking at a 1979 trans am drool safer and still ba

^ so you've given up already? Thats too bad - motorcycles are a lot of fun, and not as dangerous as people make them out to be as long as you're smart about it.

college is definitely a time to experiment and explore but not with an investment as large as a motorcycle. if you it got stolen think about the enormous stress you have as a freshman! Freshman year is the time to play it safer, and as you grow older your tastes will change and you'll be more equipped to make a better decision.
