Okay, i've looked at the other forums here about this subject and I feel like I didn't get a good enough answer.

Please don't tell me that I don't need a scooter to go around Berkeley. I'm well-aware that I can walk to any part of campus from northside. That doesn't stop that I'm getting one because I hate AC Transit and I'm not a fan of losing time. I just want some help with parking.

CAL's site for parking is confusing. As a scooter/motorcycle rider, do I actually need a permit to park on campus? What areas are free motorcycle parking? Pros and cons of permit? Cost? and Suggestions to keep my vespa from being stolen.

Thank you all for your help

If you want to park right on campus, you’ll need a permit from the transportation dept at Cal. But I think that the street parking areas on Bancroft & College, along the top of Piedmont outside of Boalt, and down by the RSF, are “free” for the whole day. Same with the motorcycle parking areas on Northside on Hearst. It is a bit confusing, since cars need residential permits to park near some of those spots, but I’m pretty sure that motorcycles and scooters don’t need the same residential stickers. (There is one motorcycle parking spot next to I-House that I think does require a residential sticker.)

I parked my Lambretta in the Cal permit-only motorcycle area next to the delivery/service driveway for I-House when I lived there for 6 months without buying a new permit and never had a problem. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to buy a permit, but no one would sell one to me. I-House kept telling me that that the lot was closed for construction (it wasn’t/isn’t) and to talk to Cal parking, but the Cal parking dept kept telling me that I-House sold the permits. So you might be able to park there during the day and chain your Vespa to the metal bar.

As for keeping hands off of your Vespa, well, I always try to park next to something that I can chain my scooter to, especially if it will be there overnight. If you want to be extra safe, put a locked cover on it to sort of “hide” it. If you’re buying a “new” Vespa (the twist & go), you can buy the lock that goes onto your front disk brake for daytime parking. But realize that if someone really wants your scooter, they’ll take it no matter what.

oh god, late reply. Thank you so much. I was also curious about night parking. I live at Foothill, and the parking in front of Cory Hall/across the street say that parking isn’t allowed from 12-6 am? What should I do to get around that?

And also, for the “EZ parking” machines, the new parking meters so to speak, what do motorcycles do? There’s no dashboard to put things on so does that mean that parking is free?
