Mount St. Mary's - what can you tell me about it

We have a meeting next week with a coach and I’m concerned about the religious requirements. Do you know how religious the school is and do students have to many religious-themed classes? I am also concerned about its location. Seems far away from civilization. How do they keep the students engaged when not studying or having class.

There is more than one. You may want to clarify which one (by location will suffice) so that others can help you better.

My S18 just graduated. He thrived with small classes, knew professors personally. Enjoyed peaceful rural setting, fishing, hiking.

True, Emmitsburg MD is twenty minute drive to county seat, Frederick. It is rural.

Kids do make friends in dorms, honors cohort, music, service interests, and/or major.

There is student activity board with weekend activities, bingo, trivia, games, still ramping up from covid. New student center.
Used to have camping trips, service outings monthly, pre-pandemic.

Athletes have own housing, dining schedules, etc., so social life for athletes depends on coach and teammates. Just switched to Metro Atlantic conference- new travel opportunities to New England.

Drinking is a temptation, not allowed in dorms. Can compare student conduct code, #reported violations with other colleges of interest
See p.58 for example

There are two theology classes required. My son says non Catholics treat like a general education requirement. Also may have a philisophy reqt, may depend on major.
There is a seminary right on campus, and the grotto on the hill has visitors, as does town of Emmitsburg (home of first American saint), so it is part of landscape and culture to respect spirituality, liturgy, service. It is what lets them “live significantly” as Dr. Trainor says.
Dr. Trainor is very impressive. He’s done a great job, and led return fall 2020 to in person classes.
New physician assistant program next year.
Kids are goal oriented(at very least, to keep merit scholarships)

  • pre professional, teaching, accounting, business, health careers, or interested in grad school.

See the spring academic festval, kids present their research (many humanities topics, not just STEM)

Thank you. This was vety informative. I wonder why the switched conferences though. Thats alot more traveling.

May wish to be next St. Peter’s in basketball NCAA March Madness!

Basketball is king for catholic schools. In the 50’s, many schools couldn’t afford football so went with basketball. Mount St. Mary’s also has a strong lacrosse program.

I used to go to church at Mount St. Mary’s with my grandfather in the summer. He lived near Gettysburg and that dioceses didn’t have Mass on Saturday nights, so we’d drive down to Emmitsburg where it was allowed. What I remember is that I still had to cover my head (and would always forget to bring a covering) and that the church was very beautiful. And then we’d buy liquor and cigarettes because they were cheaper in Maryland than in PA. Yep, an old man and a 10 year old running bottles of gin and cigs across state lines on the way home from church.
