Can you tell me about St. Mary's College of MD and Mount St. Mary's?

I managed to confuse these too -
They're both in MD but no where near each other. St. Mary's College of MD is in St. Mary's City - its near the water and seems to be hard to get to. What is around it - does anyone know what the area is like. I'm trying to decide if its worth visiting before applying. It adds several hours of travel time to the trip. Any information on the school or area would be appreciated.
Thanks

St. Mary's College is part of Maryland's public college system, and is in effect an honors LAC within the public system. It's not religiously affiliated; it just happens to be in St. Mary's City. From what I understand, it's quite a rural area.

Mt. St. Mary's University in Maryland is a private, Catholic university. Very different feel to it.

Right. 2 different places with similar names located no where near one-another.

St. Mary's College of Maryland is a well regarded college. AKA the public honors college of Maryland. The location on the Delmarva penninsula is pretty. I wouldn't call it remote, but it is a-ways from the urban centers of Maryland. Like Chedva said. It's not a religious school. It's simply named after the town its in. By the way, admissions at SMC is very competitive, even more so for out-of-staters.

Mount St. Mary's is unique in that it is small, but is D1 in a number of sports, and also has a business school and undergraduate business program. St. Mary's College has a good reputation- many people that I know have been very pleased with it. If the location was closer to Washington or Baltimore, it would be wildly popular.

Minor technicality...SMCM is not on the Delmarva.

ETA: But St. Mary's sure is pretty.

Perhaps you're thinking of Washington College in Chestertown? It is on the Delmarva penninsula and on the Chester River.

There are lots of the usual chain restaurants and box stores nearby SMCM, but not nothing that would constitute a 'downtown.' It is an attractive campus, the food was good, the housing was superior to that provided by UMD, and its a bargain if you are in-state and want to attend a LAC with other bright kids.

As above, if it were more accessible to DC and Baltimore, they'd be beating off applicants.
