A couple of stupid mom questions. My son has a triple in Unit 3. Is move-in extremely chaotic? My older two kids went to different schools and they were given a specific time to move in, so I am wondering, does everyone show up at 10AM? Is it crazy? He found out who his roommates are, when will he find out where their room is? At move-in? Also for the bathroom do they have "cubbies" in the bathroom to keep their supplies or do they bring it back and forth from their room.

He should show up a little earlier than 10, just to get the pick of the beds (if he cares about that). He should have already found out which building he’s in, but the room assignment you get on the day. There are lockers for the bathrooms, they are small though but enough for what’s needed (bring a lock).

Yes it’s crazy hectic, traffic kills, and I’d avoid going to the nearest target store (no joke, 1 hr long wait for the cashier)!

So the pick of bed is FCFS?

Fond memories of last year - lol.

DS was in a triple in Unit 2. The check in line started forming well before 10. It was a zoo for the next four hours. Lines for the only elevator were 45 minutes long (not an exaggeration). We ended up hauling all his stuff up to the eighth floor using the stairs. I made him carry all the heavy stuff!

If we were doing it again, I would check in early, go up and meet the roomies and agree on how the space will be divided. Then go grab lunch and wait for the chaos to die down, and move the stuff to the room once the elevators clear again.

Wow! I thought it is just like checking in a hotel . Never attend college here, so bear with me. Thank you for the advice. Probably need to get there 2 hours earlier.

yes, FCFS is exactly what it is. Come as early as possible in order to claim the best bed and the best desk.

All triple rooms have this layout that there is a bunk bed on one side, another bunk bed on the other side, but the lower story of that bunk bed is a desk for 2 people, and a single desk in between those bunk beds.

And here’s how it goes every time, without fail:
- Person #1 takes the single desk and the lower-story bed
- Person #2 takes one of the shared desk and the bed on top of the desk
- Last person is forced to take the shared desk and the bed on top of person #1

And of course, there are other furniture like 6-drawer chest and the last person is usually take the lower half and/or take the closet space that’s in the deepest corner.

Whatever happens, just don’t be the last person to come. Happy move-in and welcome to Berkeley.

UpMagic, thanks for the info. So there are 2 bunk beds for 3 people, then there must be 1 with 2 beds (upper and lower) and 1 with only 1 bed (upper) plus underneath space. I tried to figure out the desks layout, but not exactly sure I get it right. Wish there is a picture somewhere.

I couldn’t find a picture on line, but here’s a YouTube video of a triple.

Our S is moving in soon. We helped my wifes youngest brother move in four years ago. It was chaotic and we had got there around 9 am. Tons of people double parking and running around it was crazy. Definitely get there early. Hmm the deciding what you want and waiting for the chaos to die down is an amazing idea. Then again you definitely have to agree to things before hand. You can always claim stuff and come back to your stuff moved. Never know.

I am expecting some chaos, but parking is the major concern. My D will live in Stern. I probably need to get there at 8 for a parking space on the street.

I am pretty sure they will let you park during the Foothill parking lot which is behind Foothill/Stern dorm. (<a href=“Google Maps”>Google Maps)

If the move-in happens to be on Sunday, you can definitely park there for free.

The street parking in front of the units was free when I moved in, they bagged all the parking meters. We got there at 8am and got the perfect parking spot and were able to grab breakfast before getting in line.
