I am trying to put my head around the idea of 550 students moving into a dorm on the same day.

We will be flying in the night before, and thus our d will be limited in what she has to move in (whatever the airline limit is for three people....)

Any words of advice? Things to avoid? Suggestions for parking? Horror stories of getting to Target/other local stores and finding them completely sold out of the thing you absolutely needed?

We are hoping to leave no later than 3pm (even earlier if possible!) for Charleston.

You can do a pack and ship deal at Bed Bath and Beyond where you select all of your items at your local store and they have them ready for you at the store you select near campus. We did this with D2 and it worked out great. No wasted time choosing things during the move-in period and you will be sure to get your first choice of items instead of making do with what’s left.

If you are directed to stores off of Harbison be aware that traffic will be horrible! It’s bad on a regular basis but move-in time will be even worse. If you can find stores in other areas (away from Harbison/mall area) you might do better.

Get to the dorm to move in as early as possible. It only gets worse as the day goes on.
I think there was thread last year with specific tips for SC…check that for more info. I’m sure you’ll get lots of advice here-- the University of South Carolina families are very helpful!

Fendrock i sent you a PM.
Parking was well supervised,at least in our area of the campus.
There was help outside.
Theres two areas with big box stores, and we went to both.I didnt find them bad at all,I’m used to much more traffic and much more crowded stores.Wal Mart was the most crowded of all. We were able to get everything we needed. We shipped two or three boxes ahead, they are held in the post office in the Russell House for you to pick up, and someone there helped us move them with a dolly! The people are wonderfully helpful.

On the same lines…can you order a loft from housing? Do you have to bring your own on Move -In Day??? (still not sure which dorm D will be in yet) But I know she wants a loft if it is permissable.

Not really, theres a lofting company called Timbernest who rents out for the year or allows you to buy lofts from them, and during move in they have a tent in the Bates House parking lot where you go to pick it up and move it to your dorm

O yea I also know that some dorms section off certain floors for certain time periods so that causes it to not be extremely bad although the elevator line is always huge

wahine
the year S lived in Maxcy two Dads were building lofts in their D’s room, but I’m not sure if they got the materials themselves or ordered it from that on campus company.
You might want to see the room before making the decision about a loft.

if you ask, sometimes the dorms will give you special permission to move in a day early. that’s what my roomate and I did and it was amazing because then on actual move-in we were just setting up our room and didnt have to worry about crowds in elevators etc. Also we shipped lots of my things down here before move in and packed the rest into suitcases. there is a place on-campus where you can purchase lots from (not sure exactly but they told us about it at orientation!)

On lofts…we looked into one loft rental company that wanted the loft returned the week prior to the end of school (exam time!). That made son’s decision to NOT loft.

Fendrock,
I would also advise going early. We left Greenville in the early AM and arrived at opening time. It took until about 3 PM to get everything settled, and it just got hotter and the elevator line got longer as the day went on.
USC posts a detailed move-in guide a week or so prior to the opening day. In large dorms like Capstone, they suggest move-in times by floors, but we went early anyway. Also, it’s difficult to get 2 of those large blue bins in a room at once if your student and the roommate are there are the same time along with other family members. Fortunately, we had most of my son’s things in and the bin returned by the time his roommate and his parents showed up with their moving bin. Then our family went to lunch to give the roommate’s family some some space while he got his things moved in. We tried to take most everything son needed with us, and then son and his roommate and some friends went to Harbison area to pick up other items a few days later.

Before looking through the letters we received and the USC website, can anyone tell us when we are notified what dorm is assigned? Is it before orientation? Thanks.

Does anyone know the move-in date for upperclassmen?

Nike
move in dates for all dorms will be the same, regardless of what class year you are in…except if you get the permission to move in early due to being out of state. sometime in June I think there will be a form that pops up on the housing site to fill out asking for the one day early move in.

Okay great thanks. Do you happen to know that date?

Move in day is Saturday, August 15.

When I called about moving in a day early for OOS, I was unable to confirm it, despite all the reports of this possibility here.

So if anyone gets official word about early move in for this year, please post – and I do want to confirm before buying air tickets…

fendrock and others
I dont remember an “official notice” about the early move in(in other words, no letter in themail,no email type notice)…S was informed to look for the form on housing by a then current USC student so we just watched the housing page of the website until the form popped up.Its popped up each year since so i assume it will again.Sorry, I cant remember how long before actual move in it appeared…but I do remember being in the same dilemma as you about booking airline tix.I know it was enough of a time difference so booking the tix wasnt a problem…maybe early -mid June?

Do you know if you had to be logged into VIP in order to see the early move in info, or was it on the main housing page?

I believe it was on the main housing page on sc.edu but if anyone remembers differently please let Fendrock know…

I remember seeing that also, and I think cathymee is right about it being somewhere on the main housing page. My son is staying on campus this summer to do research for a professor, and they told him his fall room would likely be ready on the 14th. I guess they have to clear out the summer dorms and get them ready before the main move-in day on the 15th.

We moved D in the day before the official move in date in 8/07. We got there right when the doors opened, and moved everything in a few trips. We got to park right in front of the dorm, no lines no waiting. It was a completely different story on the official move in date. We were still hanging out in town, doing some shopping and organizing, but it was crazy. We were so glad we moved in the day before.

I had an IM exchange with the housing office, who granted that the friday move-in is “not without precedent.” They also told me that most south area buildings (Bates, Bates West, and the Roost) will not be able to accommodate early arrival due to scheduling conflicts, and to look for a move in reservation form on the housing website in mid June.
