Moving my son in tomorrow

My son is trying out for the Marching Band, so we're moving him in to his palacial lodgings (ha!) in Morrisey Manor tomorrow evening. I'm glad to be returning to campus as the father of a Domer instead of just another dad on the prospective student tour.

I'm going to miss my son, but I know he's anxious to get moved in and excited about his future - and band tryouts. :)

Good luck to you CCers moving in on the weekend.

Tony

congrats to your son, hopefully at this time next year i will be moving into notre dame

The Notre Dame band is the only college band I would try out for if accepted.

Btw, do you know how many are accepted compared to how many try out for the band?

heard it was like half. definite hearsay tho.

Yeah, I saw the marching band prospects as they marched through our game of kickball in north quad. there are so many that they must have to cut like half. especially when there are so many sophs juniors and seniors.

I heard from my son this morning - his audition was successful, and he's now a member of the Band of the Fighting Irish! His mother and I are almost as happy as we were on April 1st, when his acceptance arrived in the mail.

Band prospects in the Class of 2011 may want to know that the auditions were competitive, and several prospective members of his section were not selected.

Now we're really anxious for football season to begin. :)

Congrats Radionicist!

Heard the marching band on Sunday in the B-Ball stadium during orientation program and was't that amazing!

Being a member of the Marching Band is right up there with being a Football Player--- :)
a great accomplishment at ND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the reply, SJCM - I think making the Marching Band is a big deal, too. :)

My son wanted a college with a community feel, excellent reputation, and the chance to be a member of a strong marching band. His mother and I wanted a college that was within a day's drive, had a strong Catholic atmosphere, and was known for academics. In the end, we all got what we wanted!

I note that your son is also in Morrissey Manor. Is he enjoying the dorm so far? I think my son is liking it more everyday, though he wasn't wild about the jail cell-sized rooms. Come to think of it, I've seen jail cells that are more spacious. :)

Tony

Jail cell.....maybe but ONE person in that size.
I have been trying to explain to my NJ friends how small the rooms are, and they aren't getting it. How big do you think the rooms are? Of course the sink in the middle isn't any help either.

Lost sleep Friday night worrying about the room, and of course, the Morrissey staff came in and lofted the beds which meant if you turn over you fall 5 ft.
But, son ( on first floor) said he slept fine, and isn't complaining at all.

Of course, the Rector's speech about no alcohol, wasn't good news to son ( or us) either, but the Morrissey boys promise that they have fun, and all is fine with the dorm. I felt better :)

Where are you from? PM if you would like
judy

My S is in Dillon where the rooms are also cell-sized. He used to tell his friends that his room (a double) was slightly smaller than the key on a basketball court (12' x 15').

As a sophomore, 3 guys shared 2 of those rooms. They jammed all the modular furniture into 1 room so they could have a living room. You could hardly squeeze your body into the "aisle" of the bedroom. It was pretty awful but they loved it.

This year, a group of 8 friends have all 6 rooms of a hallway. He says the arrangement is "spectacular". I haven't seen it yet because he's a student trainer and was in temporary quarters when I brought him there on Aug 3 to start work. I can't wait to see what "spectacular" entails...

My son's freshman double was 9 X 14. But it was in Dillon. He wouldn't live any where else on campus. This year, four guys share 2 "cells" and a third common room that gives them some living room.

You're right, bdmrad. It was 9 x 14, so it was considerably smaller than the basketball key. My son's arrangement is the same as yours this year except that they got together with another "quad" and took over a whole hallway. They're pretty pleased that they have 2 connected rooms that they'll be using as common rooms. And my son wouldn't live anywhere else, either. (Maybe the 2 of them know each other, but it's a pretty big dorm.) He'll probably stay at Dillon for his senior year, too.

So wonder what the dimensions of my son's cell is in Morrissey, if they are known as the most cramped rooms on campus ?
Very reassuring to hear that the kids do, in fact, love their dorms and do creative things with the rooms. As I recall you can fall out of bed into the South Dining Hall from Dillon :)

My S was so cute on Sunday, "Mom, come in and look what I did", which consisted of putting some speakers on the desk shelf, and hanging some clothes on hangers .....
" really like what you did with the place, son " ...........LOL!! He is having a great time, played golf yesterday, and is using the new bike to go over to St Mary's !!!

The entire section of freshmen prospects marched through our game of kickball in the north quad lol. It took like 15 minutes for all of them to get through. I guess thats how many there were, but many were in fact cut.
