Hello everyone,
I am currently a junior in Ontario high school. I am an American citizen who moved to Canada about 3 years ago but I want to go back to Massachusetts for college. My family might move either this summer, next summer, or not at all. If we move this summer, I would probably be eligible for in-state tuition by my sophomore year in college. However, I don’t think it’s likely that we’re moving this year. I want to go to an affordable school, but many in Mass are very expensive. I might consider outside Mass, but idk. What should I do?
Also, how is GPA converted from ON high schools? I have mostly 90’s and some 80’s.
DD is also a junior (rising senior) in Ontario, with similar grades and a similar situation. I looked into moving to CA to get her instate tuition, so it may be different than Mass, but I found that if I established residency in the state before she turned 18, then she would have in state tuition after a year. If I moved after she was 18, then no in state tuition period.
What do you want to study?
The Ontario grades to US gpa is a murky issue. I asked this question at a college fair and got different answers depending on the university rep I was talking to you. Carnegie Mellon said above 80% is a 4.0. Berkeley said above 90% is a 4.0. What are the course medians on your report card? How far above them are your grades?
Thanks for the response! I’m usually around 15-20% above the course median in STEM classes and 10% above in others. I want to study a science related field but I really have no idea. Heath or engineering probably
It sounds like you should be in the top 10% of your class and that’s what admissions really cares about.
Have a look at Franklin W. Olin College for engineering. They give a 50% tuition discount to all their admits.
Have you considered staying in Ontario? It would be a LOT cheaper. Otherwise, for the States, you’ll be chasing merit money and that will take some research.
I have considered staying but I really have a ton more people that I know in Boston from my whole life living there. I’ll be able to narrow down more options after I take the ACT next Saturday. Thanks for the suggestion, look like a really neat school if I can get accepted!
I would definitely look at UT, Queens, McGill and UBC. If you can get in province tuition Canadian universities are a real bargain compared to the US.
I’m still not a permanent resident so I would basically be paying international fees to all those schools you mentioned. I’m in a weird situation because I don’t even know where my family is going to be living even 3 months from now
I’m in the same situation as you. I moved from Florida 3 years ago and I am currently living in Manitoba. My parents might get permanent residency but, we aren’t sure. I have no idea where I will be living for senior year we might have to move, we might not. Even if we move I have no idea where (wherever the job is). I’ve started looking at early graduation so that it wouldn’t effect me but it probably would be easier to get into university with the college classes that I would take in senior year.
I would suggest to start looking at universities as if you weren’t moving. Find some you like based on the school itself, then look at how moving would effect that. I would also recommend looking at how your courses would transfer if you had to move. Also check graduation requirement for possible schools near where you would possibly live.
Hope this helps you
