moving stuff from nyc --> NU?

i live in nyc, and i have no idea how i'm going to drag all my stuff to NU come september. it's too far of a distance to drive, and i don't have any family in the immediate area, so i can't slowly mail boxes to them to pick up in september. i don't even know how much stuff i'll need to bring (somehow my brother brought a ton to his college, though i can't imagine what any of it was).

so: for students who don't live within reasonable driving distance, how did/will you transport your stuff without too much trouble or spending too much money (ie., buying everything in chicago)? will this be a huge problem when they kick people out of residence halls during breaks (for me, at least, not necessarily my stuff)?

i'm also considering doing a pre-orientation program... or is this just going to complicate the situation?

thanks for any insight. :|

i'm from CT, so i know how it works out for me. this should help.

thanks for the link, tophat :D

more questions: does nu offer summer storage? if i have to ship via UPS, when should this be done? (i'm surprised this doesn't seem to be a problem for that many NU students..?)

I am from NY, too.

First of all, I flew Southwest which allowed 2 big bags per person- with both my parents, we were able to get all my clothes, winter jacket, etc. no problem.

Second, Bed Bath & Beyond has a nice thing where you run around the store in NY with a radar gun and zap everything you want for college. Then you tell them the date you'll need your stuff picked up and let them know Wilmette is the BB&B closest to NU, and when you arrive, you go to BB&B in Wilmette and voila! There's everything you zapped, all boxed and ready to go. This saved my LIFE. I got a comforter, pillows, cups, plates, microwave, etc. and didn't have to bring any of it. So I'd recommend doing that.

NU has no summer storage provided but there are storage facilities nearby.

sometimes it takes a while for the mailrooms to be up and running at Northwestern, so I'd suggest packing the stuff you really need (i.e. a few changes of clothes, toiletries, computer, some sheets/pillow ) in your airline stuff, then ship all the rest.
