Hi, I'm going to be a senior and have changed schools this summer (been going to the same school through high school). How will this affect my college admissions? My previous school is highly competitive, sending 20-30 guys to Ivys each year. The new school is not so competitive, maybe 5-8 guys make it to Ivys. Will my admission chances drop because I switched to a less competitive school? What about Applications- will the new school counselor fill them or my old school's counselor? Are my transcripts going to be from my old school or new school? Thanks!

I almost had to switch senior year.

It's difficult to say whether your admission chances will drop because of the school change. There are a lot of factors that are considered when reviewing an application, and my guess is that if you explain the reason for the transfer the admissions office would be understanding. It also depends on which schools you apply to, how your new school calculates gpa, what your test scores are like, etc. In the end, it is impossible to predict what sort of impact it will have, but so long as you didn't drop out of the other school or anything like that it wouldn't drastically impact your admission. As for the applications themselves, I am guessing your new counselor will fill them out since that is the counselor you will have to work with/through for your applications and transcripts. I don't know the details about transcripts, so I would say check with the administration at your school. Your new counselor especially should be able to help you the most with questions like these.
Of course, my opinion is not that of an expert, so I would say the best thing you can do is talk to the people at your new school. They're the ones who will be able to help you the most, perhaps more than anyone on cc.

I'm dealing with the same situation. Just get transcripts sent from your previous school, it's not like you have any grades at the new school and it'll come with the school report of your previous school, so colleges can see how impressive your old school was. You'll probably have to fax over a request.

My guess is that your new counselor will have to fill out the counselor rec, but if your old counselor knows you really well, have him/her write you an add'l rec.
