I wanted an mp3 player that would allow net access. Any ideas?

iPod Touch has an awesome web browser (Safari)!

Wow that's totally not what I was thinking when I read the topic title, heh.

^^

I was thinking the same thing until I actually read the OP's post, hehe. You are not alone.

iphone has everything. mp3, phone, internet, instant messaging, texting, games, gps, etc.
Drawback is that you have to sign up for ATT plan--it's the only plan available for iphones.

^^^ You can unlock it though

see I kindda like the archos 5 (ARCHOS) I thought I could get the cordless ear phones. I was thinking I could use it for the gym, school breaks etc.

I thought about an Ipod, but I don't want to be tied down to Apple. I have a macbook pro, so I guess I have one foot in already...

The Touch is a wonderful mp3 player and everything else. It can sync with your Mac and will do so over a wireless network. It can do this on its own. Mail, address book and calendar sync very nicely. The apps (lots of free ones) are amazing.

I like the Archos brand - they tend to have players with features that other brands just wont do.

For instance, I bought a 20 gb Archos mp3 player from them in 2003 that recorded video from any input source (tv, vcr, dvd player, etc), recorded audio from any input source (voice, radio, stereo). Recording off the radio was awesome because it had a "retro record" feature which meant that it would automatically add the 30 seconds prior to when you hit record so that you didn't miss the beginning of the song - you could trim it off later. It also had a 1 mp camera (remember this was 2003). Now that it is four years old, it has no battery life, and is rather bulky by today's standards. I still keep it though (plugged in) so I can record dvd's. The Archos 5 sounds like a cool product!

I'm thinking I want that one or the 7, but would it be a good one for the gym do you think?

No, the Archos uses a non-solid state hard drive, which makes it liable to crap out due to collisions. The coverage of repairs is ****ty, compared to Apple. And its huge.

ditto, and I was wondering how you would pull it off.

so ipod touch then?

I have an archos 605 and to be honest the Touch is probably better. The browser is a little clunky on the archos and it crashes a lot. Get the Touch and then use third party software instead of itunes (look up what's best to use, I'm not positive) and you ought to be alright.

I wouldn't take either to the gym though. Go out and get a $20 2 gig mp3 player (sandisk and a few other places make them) and you'll be more than good for the gym.

Are there big dif. between fthe first and 2nd gens?

THIS is an mp3 player with benefits:

ok I went with the ipod touch 32gb
