I’m assuming all of the emails went out yesterday, so I’m glad that my D has already gotten into BTP. She was worried about which she would choose if she got into MPulse. The advantage to BTP is that you get to work with and be seen by many different professionals, casting agents, and college professors from the top schools. She was looking forward to seeing again those who selected her for a master class or performance and refreshing their memory prior to college auditions, so now she will be able to do that. I agree with previous posts - the training is awesome at any of the top programs, so you really can’t lose. Plus, I don’t have to forfeit my $700! Oh, and the parent seminars for two days at the end of the program are invaluable.

MomofB- Same here. So glad we had a great back up. I think it will be a great experience. It would have been a hard (but great) decision to make. We may have chosen MPulse just because my son is so young (just turned 16) but everything happens for a reason! Mine can try again next year for MPulse. Be sure and Facebook friend BTP. Today they talk about 4 alumni that are in the revival of “How to Succeed in Business”. Congrats on being accepted to a great program. I am looking forward to the festival!

Thanks, theatremomma - congrats to your son too! I am always impressed with BTP’s FB status. It makes you feel like there are many ways to define success and many opportunities out there for talented kids!

Does anyone know if/when the “rejection” e-mails go out? My D has not yet received anything. Auditioning as both a female and a sophomore she knew her chances this year would be slim, but we’d just like confirmation before planning her next move for this summer.

Theatremomma and momofB I just wanted to say that my daughter went to BTP after her sophomore and junior year and had a wonderful experience. I know mpulse is great too, but you have a great option. My daughter is now in her sophomore year as a Michigan MT and loving that too. She has kept in touch with many of her BTP connections as well! Good luck to you both!

We have not either. My thought is they are waiting until tomorrow to see if anyone declines a spot today- just a guess. Everyone must accept by today. haven’t seen anyone post that they are not going!

Thanks mommamt. I think it’s just that everyone hates a REJECTION!! We were all very excited about BTP before the rejection. So glad to hear you daughter is happy and at Michigan. I guess we mistakenly think “If they don’t like him now, they won’t like him later”- especially when they take even FEWER for college. Why do we torment ourselves with these crazy thoughts? Did you go to the festival? Worth doing? Did you seel it was a safe environment for a sophomore?

I know rejections are hard, but unfortunately part of life and especially part of theatre life. Each accepted class has had a mixture of those that have attended mpulse and those that have done other summer programs. In my daughters year there is another young man she attended BTP with. I think what is important is the growth they gain from these top notch summer programs and then what they can bring with them to their college auditions. The summer programs also give these students a wonderful few of the other talent level out there, really helpful to see where you fall in line on a national basis. The instruction they receive and the connections they make are invaluable!

In the years that my daughter attended we did go to the performances at the end which were held at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center…they were top notch! I believe they have changed the format since then, so I am not familiar with that.

As far as safety, it is a very well run program. I was not concerned and she did not have any issues. Again, I believe there have been some changes since her summers there and I am sure they are only improvements! The students are kept extremely busy, so there is not much time for them to find any trouble. My daughter is considering attending again this summer…just waiting to hear on another audition. She has contacted Kim Slade and they are discussing the possibilities. I really cannot say enough good things about BTP!

We have not heard anything either, assuming a rejection, but it is so much easier knowing that we have an acceptance to the OCU summer program which we have heard great things about :)

mommamt, since you’ve been through this and are a few years ahead of us…what year would you recommend BTP for a high school girl? My D’s 16 and a sophomore, and I hesitated to apply for that program for this summer due to her being on the younger end of the wider age spectrum there. We’re thinking it might be a good program for NEXT year, since that would be her summer prior to college auditions. Of course she’ll also want to apply to MPulse again next year, since she’s attending school in Michigan now. She’s done summer MT programs elsewhere the past 2 summers (one w/BAA in NY and one @ OCU) but is just now old enough for a few of the other ones we’re considering. Your opinion would be much appreciated!

My son got a rejection from U Mich about a week and a half ago…very disappointing. (However, he has gotten accepted at Baldwin Wallace, Elon and Muhlenberg, so he’s thrilled with those).

However, someone I know DID get accepted into the MT program via a phone call from the Dean yesterday!

Kathy, great news about your son! This thread is about the summer pre-college program at UMich (called MPulse) and not the BFA in MT program, just in case you did not realize it. :)

The link below is the thread discussing the BFA in MT admissions cycle this year at UMich:

Thanks, MommaMT. My D went to BTP last summer, as well as another 3-week summer program, where she got the lead in the production at the end of the session. It was good for her (and us) to see that she is competitive in a bigger “pool” of kids. BTP is a physically exhausting (they go to bed around midnight or later and get up at 6:30 every day) and artistically challenging, yet amazing, experience. The way my D put it - “every class is an audition” because they are always being evaluated and then selected for either a class performance, a master class, or the Festival performance, and getting a solo in that is a coveted honor. So it’s very stressful and exhausting, but oh so worth it. For many reasons, she was not interested in going anywhere else this summer because she felt she would get even more out of BTP the second time, now that she knows what to expect. The rejection I’m assuming she got to MPulse will thus be much easier to take and is another reality check for her as to just how competitive this field is. All of this will help her to stay open-minded as she compiles her list of colleges. Congrats to all who got into MPulse!

thanks for letting me know!!

I’ve been thinking about what an emotional roller-coaster this business is . . . my daughter attended the state Thespian Festival last weekend and did well in the competitive events, but not as well as she’d expected to. She was kind of discouraged, and then on Monday the MPulse acceptance email came! So then she felt great!

They do all of this work and training and preparation and practice, and it all comes down to a few people and their subjective opinions. I’m just wondering how I’m going to help my daughter stay sane over the next year!

I received an email today from MPulse that said they are still reviewing applications/auditions. When I emailed back to ask if it is a rolling process or are they just going to fill the spots that were offered and had been turned down, she replied that there have been some acceptances sent out but the faculty is still reviewing applications. Any words of advice from those of you who have been through this process before? We’re not sure what to make of it.

I mailed by BTP check today. I’m moving on.

This is fourkidsmom’s D congrats to those who made mpulse! I ended up pulling out my application and just sending in the check to BTP! I just wanted to post this on here even though it doesn’t really go in this thread…but whatever. Those of you who chose to do BTP like I am I have created an unofficial FB site so we can meet these people we have been talking to on CC …
…sorry this was sort of the wrong place but I know the discussion here is mostly between BTP and mpulse!

Theatremomma, your son (and you) will love what BTP has to offer! My D is so excited about going back. Regarding the MPulse email, I was just surprised when I read it - I expected it to be a confirmation that she wasn’t accepted and I’m just trying to learn how their process works.

Oops link didn’t go ok go onto fb and search broadway theatre project 2011
