Hi all,

I've just been admitted to the University of Wisconsin at Madison for the MS program in EE starting Spring 2010. Before I make a final call on where to enroll (other unis mentioned below), I thought I should seek advice from this very active community...

Please do share your academic/social/economic experiences/knowledge on graduate studies at UW Madison.

Other unis I've apped:
Hong Kong Uni of Sci and Tech- admitted
Michigan State Uni- pending
Iowa State Uni- pending
Boston Uni- pending
Michigan Tech- admitted

Cheers,
Varun

Hi, my daughter is a first year grad student at UW-Madison. She is on PhD track in CS. I can’t tell you a whole lot as she has only been there 3 months and I haven’t visited yet. But her experience so far is extremely positive.

The town is a University town and has a lot going on. She has mostly been social with the CS dept grad students so far, doing some biking and having a couple poker games and other social events. But she has also branched out to meeting people not in the U and going out to see some music she is interested in. She likes the town much better than Providence RI where she was an undergrad. She is into biking and is getting good use of the gym too.

The prices are very good there. Housing costs are low, especially since she is living off campus. You can join the U gym for classes for $20. She has funding but it is tight.

She is working with a professor on an Independent Study as well as taking a couple of classes and working as a TA.

It is a very good grad school and ranked well compared to some of the schools on your list, is that right?

I would be uncertain about the weather, but she seems unconcerned entirely. She did not mind East Coast weather compared to CALIF, but Madison gets colder. That is the only downside I can think of so far.

Posted on your UW thread as well. The weather in Madison will be MUCH better than in Michigan’s upper peninsula, plus the city will be much more cosmopolitan. Also easier to get to Chicago and other major US cities. Your other pending midwest cities will have similar winter weather to Madison’s- snow and cold- so determine those choices based on the program and international students’ considerations. Consider the availability of ethnic foods- restaurants and stores- enough Indian available in Madison.
