Has anybody applied to this summer internship? Applicants are expected to hear back in mid-March but I'm just anxious because I guess that is normal. If you applied, please reply and we can go from there.

thanks

I did! How competitive do you think this program is? I have not heard of too many other people applying to it.

I do not know anyone who applied because a lot of my friends are not into research. I’m sure it is pretty selective because it’s MIT and there’s about 40 people every summer. Didn’t you see that last part that let’s MIT distribute our apps to other programs?? And I received a Auto response when I emailed Monica, so she’s probably overwhelmed with applications and emails from potential participants! I wonder when we hear back… probably next week.

Yea hopefully they let us know next week. What labs/topics/professors did you choose? I put down 2 professors in quantum optics in the electrical engineering and computer sciences department, and some project related to levitation using magnetic fields!!! I really did not try very hard on the essays though so I probably won’t get in. What do you think will be the cutoff for GPA? (Mine is right at the minimum required to apply)

Son was interested in one of the MIT programs, but it said you needed to be entering senior year. He is only in his second year. Looking forward to hearing if y’all make it and how you like it, as he would love to do this next summer.

I applied to the mathematics program and my gpa is alright. It works I guess. I think as long as you’re at a 3.5, you should be fine. It’s a program that encourages people to pursue a PhD, so you would have to have a good gpa and 3.5 is pretty damn good for college anywhere (minus remedial work that some people indulge in). The essays were alright for me. I gave them some thought and they are what they are. Our apps are still viewable on the website!

The MSRP is for anyone who is not graduating this spring. So, juniors and non-graduating seniors are eligible to apply. It was tough getting 3 reccommenders in the field. I almost got desperate, yet again, your grad school app needs to be focused …so, I see their logic. I guess we will have to see. I did not apply anywhere else, so if it’s not MIT, then I will have to find something last minute or just take summer classes somewhere.

That’s fun. How much do you think they’ll care if you’re a minority but not the ones stated (African American, Native-American, Hispanic) ?? The program itself seems really good, but the one drawback is that the stipend is really small compared to some of the other REUs.

I personally don’t think they will fuss too much about ethnicity. Although that is the focus, they strive for diversity. So, people of different origins, thought processes and interests. They want people who are open-minded, is that I understand from the website and the application.

In terms of REUs, I can see where you’re coming from. But, MIT has such a great reputation. I think the experience is priceless. Besides, they also cover housing, which some of the REU do not cover. On top of all this, although they probably get many applications, they typically have 35-40 participants. They set the standards high, which limits the number of applicants. But, programs typically choose between 5 and 20 participants. So, I can see how they are giving more people an opportunity, consequently, having to reduce compensation.

Have you applied anywhere else? I wonder if passing our applications to other programs will actually do anything/help our chances.

Well, I just got rejected. Hopefully I’ll have better luck with some of the other ones I applied to. (And yes I applied to Berkeley, CalTech, and a few others).

I got a message saying I am on a waiting list. I didn’t even know such a thing existed. What did the email that you got say? Did anyone else hear back? I hate applying to these programs.

At least you still have a chance. The email just said something like “we regret to inform you that…it was really competitive this year etc…”. Typical rejection letter.

Good luck!
