M.i.t. Wtp

Did anyone out there apply to MIT's Women in Technology program?

raises hand

Don't know about my chances though, I rushed my app the day before it was due. Even if I don't get in though I don't think I'll mind too much, because like 2 days after I applied to that and RSI I realized I wanted to do a math camp instead. So if I get in, great, and if I don't I shall go towards les mathematics.

anyone else? or does anyone know how hard it is to get in?

The admit rate seems to be
~1:10 to the WTP program compared to the actual MIT admission rate of ~1:5 for us the obviously  gender :)

(1:7 for boys and girls together)

More applicants seem to be admitted to EECS than to the ME program
in WTP (realtively newer). Notifications this year are supposed to be
on March 31st :D

I applied. I'm so nervous. It's the first thing I think about when I wake up every morning. Do you want to compare application info (test scores, gpa etc.) to get a better idea of where we stand? If you want to contact me my AIM s/n is oharder2breatheo. I'd love to hear from anyone.

alwaysxvigilant- i'm nervous too, i'm worried that my application isn't going to be competitive. were all your test scores above the 80th percentile? all of mine were except for my SAT II Chem one, but I was hoping that they'd take into account that I got a 5 on the Chem AP and disregard the SAT II score.

I took college chem at the community college so I really don't have a test score for that besides the A I received in the class. I got a perfect score in the math portion of the SAT, but I have yet to take any SAT II's.. big uh oh, I know. I'm currently enrolled in AP Physics B and AP Calc AB as far as science/math go. My weighted GPA is a 4.45 and I'm ranked #1 in my class. I'm the "big fish" in the "little pond" but my worst fear is that I'm going to be nothing more than a tadpole amongst the applicants.

umm hmm. yes i'm competing with people with amazing stats again!

well my GPA is an 8.4/9.0, chem SAT II 730(78th percentile or something, it was unfortunate), 74/80/65 CR/M/W PSAT, 5 in AP Comp Sci, taking AP Chem and Bio right now.

other things: qualified for AIME two years now; on science team, won one competition at time of application, good team that's gone to nationals before but that was before i came; track captain for next year.

Its times like this that make me wish I didn't live in a podunk little town. Okay.. so its not THAT podunkish.. but comparatively it is. I don't even know what the hell AIME is. We don't have a science team or a math team. And AP Comp Sci at MY school?? HAH! Yeah right. As it is they have to alternate AP Chem/Physics every year because otherwise there wouldn't be enough sign up.

My other crap is I've been in marching band for 3 years, played the clarinet for 5, and plan on being Drum Major next year. I was also captain of the JV basketball team and will be on Varsity next year. (Sports get more attention than academics, woo capitalistic society!!) sarcasm Uhmmm I tutor math sometimes.. and I've won 3rd place in an individual state math comp.

Big question.. What did yall write for your "something you do for fun" essay? and what "original work" did you send in?

haha don't worry alwaysxvigilant, i don't have AP Comp Sci @ my school either!!

don't wanna list all of my stats but basically:80M, 75W, 69CR on PSAT (ew CR), 5 on AP Chem & AP U.S., ACT 34, gpa 4.12/4.00 (school only weights AP classes), taking AP Calc BC, AP Physics, & AP Lang this year

other stuff: varsity tennis team, sales associate then quit when i got a math tutor job, science olympiad team regional champs 2 years in a row, 8th place in state last year, looking to improve state ranking this year (we're a relatively new team- only 3 years old!), principal flute in area symphony orchestra & section leader in school wind ensemble, Editor-in-Chief of school newspaper
...sounds alright but really not that much in math/sci, sure as hell would like to qualify for AIME but keep missing it by a few pts each time!

i'm not sure how i'll stack up against all the other apps, i'm worried i'm not competitive enough, but it would be nice to get in (who wouldn't want to?). my "original work" was just me describing how i "create" music on my flute- bit cheesy but i couldn't think of anything else that i was really proud of, and music is a big part of my life...what did you all write about??

my original work thingy was a house I designed on Architectural Desktop. I included the floor plan, the pictorial of it, and pictures of the 3D model I made. (Yeah I included it all on a single sided 8/12 x 11 page, but it was really tiny lol) My thing I do just for fun was reading. I don't know if that was a good choice or not.. but it came from the heart, and its one of the only things that I do that isn't partially motivated by wanting to get into a really good school.

I work at a salad place, and I'm a vegetarian. Fitting, eh? Oh, and my name is Meg. :)

AIME is the American Invitational Mathematics Exam. Basically to take it you have to qualify by taking another exam before it called the AMC.

for my something i do for fun essay i think i wrote about building robots, but i really can't remember.

and for my original it was about camp. and how i love camp. it was like a creative writing piece on my previous camp(CTY) basically. now that i think about it i probably should've written about something else, but ah well.

ahh got it. In all honesty.. does anyone that reads this think that I have any shot at getting accepted? Because after seeing the competition.. the black cloud of doubt is lurking overhead. I liked it better when I was confident in my abilities, lol.

I applied as well. My “original work” I sent in was a piece of knitting (8” by 4”) which had a concealed message written in code. The code was written in stripes, each stripe color correlated with 1s or 0s (black= 1 white=0), which formed different binary numbers (each number was separated by a red stripe), which in turn corresponded to a base 10 number, which can be associated with a letter of the alphabet (a=1 b=2 etc.) (the “message” was my name, and yes, I did put a key for how to read the code and giving the word/letters it concealed). I’m one of the heads of the knitting club at my school; we knit baby blankets for orphans in South America.

But, (if you can’t already guess) my standardized test scores are not completely outstanding. And my school is extremely competitive: (aka) I’m not in the top 10% of my class. So, I’m really extremely nervous about getting accepted. Does any one know how much the essays count vs. standardized test scores?

wow! flower! that is SOO COOL!! :D.. I tried knitting once... it didn't turn out too well lol. But that is really cool. I also love that you send baby blankets to the orphans. Stuff like that shows me that there is hope for this country yet.. even with our lovely president. (1 year, less than 9 months and counting!!)

And to your question.. I have absolutely no fricking idea. Sorry :(.

I get talkative when nervous/excited. So basically my rambles are going to continue until the letter comes, and continue until the end of July if I get in, and if I don't, I'll shut up real quick, promise. But first I'll congratulate those that did get in, because I hate sore losers, and I'm not about to become one.

oh man flwr830 that's so amazing and creative!!!! :)

i don't know anything about the admissions standards so i can't say anything... i'm so nervous!! but i think i'll be okay if i don't get in since everyone else sounds absolutely amazing. we don't find out until beginning of april right?

Here is a way to think about rating your WTP Entry:

Somewhere on your application

SATII scores > 750 +5

lol out of that i would have a 17. not bad, since i've done no research of any kind and i haven't taken most of the classes.

i think SATII scores should be weighted less than 5, should be more like the PSAT scores from 1-3, with >700 1 point, >750 2 points, and 800 3 points.

hehe. I think that everyone who posts on this site should get a +5 (for caring enough about her wtp application so that she is still worried about it over a month after sending it in).
