Is anyone out there a military strategic studies major? I read USAFA’s website and just wanted a cadet’s perspective on that major. Any information would be appreciated.

Raimius is a military history major, which is kind of close to MSS. He could probably give you better info about it than I could.

i know its a lot of theory and such, like Clausewitz and Sun Tzu. its a "fuzzy" major (but u'll have to take language no matter ur major). thats about all i know, other than there are 2 core MSS classes

Yeah, I'm Mil History, but MSS was my second choice. It is more theoretical than Mil History. I know a few MSS majors, who could answer specifics. Do you have any specific questions?

I read about the courses on the admissions website and they seem really interesting. I just wanted a cadets perspective on the major. Do they find it interesting? What sort of work and labs are involved? That sort of thing. Also, does having a "fuzzy" major make it more difficult to earn a pilot slot?

How is military history?

Not sure about the rest of the MSS courses, or if they'll do it for future semesters, but this semester everyone in MSS 220 (sorry if I have the name wrong, they keep changing it) got to learn military strategy, and then got to test it out on the game Empire Earth for 4 lessons.

Your major will not affect your chance at a pilot slot. Choose what you want to learn. The only thing your major would matter for is if you want an engineering, chemist, etc. job in the AF. Also, you need a technical major if you want to go for test pilot school in the future. Otherwise, you can get pilot with any major.

now THAT sounds like my kinda class :) hahaha

My ds is thinking about MSS too. Thinks it is very cool. He'd love to major in video games, especially medievel total war. A mother's dream...

Lol...not quite. MSS has a lot of reading and papers, but it also has some pretty cool stuff like flight sims.

and you have plenty of time once you're here to pick a major. there are majors nights where every major sets up infor tables and you can talk to faculty and cadets in that major. most courses the first year at least are core classes anyway.

i had never heard of OR until i was talking with my Calc III teacher during EI. he asked me what i wanted to major in, i told him the sorta thing i liked, and he recommended it. now its working out great.
