What are you studying or plan to study as your major?

My major is Systems Engineering Human Systems, which is basically ergonomics (designing things so that humans may more easily use them).

My major will probably be Humanities, or possibly History. I haven't decided yet.

I haven't yet declared, but I'm strongly considering Ops Research (often shortened just to OR). Wikipedia can explain it much better than I can, I'm sure, so check the link if you're curious for more info.

Probably Mathematical Science (fancy way to say math)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to major in Biology and minor in Spanish. I am somewhat of a loss as to how that applies to the Air Force, because all I want to do is work with people, but when I'm out, I'm thinking about being a child psychologist or a nutritionist... or something to do with sports medicine. Haha, quite a range there I know. :)

Oh yeah, add a minor in Spanish for me too!

I am a Biochemistry major with a Japanese minor.

Right now I'm probably going to major in Sys Eng Management. Which is like half management and half engineering, so I'm hoping it will give me the best of both worlds..haha. I want to minor in Spanish also..but I'm not sure how that will work out. There really is alot to pick from as far as major's go and from what I've been told no one major will help you get that pilot slot more then the next person.. so it is really about picking something that you will enjoy doing.

Exactly, your slot is determined on your OPA (GPA/MPA/PEA) and not on your particular major.

Is there a major on which cadets might look askance? (I always laugh when I hear about Dance majors in civilian colleges.) Do the engineers look down on say - the Law Major? And how about the Military Strategic Studies major? Sounds like a major based on video games!

Sys Eng Management is like that lol. I know when I told my Engineering Teacher(Civil Engineer) I was thinking about majoring in it, he jokingly said that doesnt even count as a Engineering Major, which I partly agree, considering half of the curriculem is Management..lol.

Does anyone know how many go the astro engineering route and where most people with that major would be based?

The big thing about majors is to pick something you like. While some majors may be viewed as more difficult than others, although this varies from person to person (as some "super smart" techie majors may struggle in less analytic courses), all cadets take a large quantity of core classes. This means that even if a cadet chooses a major like business or humanities, they're still going to have to take a ton of engineering classes, science classes, etc.

If you choose to become a pilot, your major won't really matter, but if for some reason pilot training doesn't work out, you can try to use your major to get a job in that field. Case in point: I majored in behavioral science - human factors and minored in German. I washed out of pilot training somewhat recently, and my new job is going to be as a behavioral scientist. Also, because I majored in this, I already know quite a few people in the same job. One of my best friends from the Academy is in the same squadron I am going into, and my cadet flight commander from when I was a three degree has told me I can stay at her house until I find an apartment. Plus, my faculty mentor from the Academy wrote one of my letters of recommendation to get the job. It's really never too early to start networking...

If you go Astro you just may get to meet a certain Colonel, and AFA star that had a big hand in this forum. Right Uncynical.

True. It'd be blasphemous to speak against astro on this board... although I will admit there was a point in time during my last semester as a cadet that I wondered if I'd graduate on time due to that class, haha.

Hey, UNcynical! Good to see you on here again. Hope everything is going better now, although it sounds like it is.

Don't choose a major based entirely on whether or not it will give you a great job in the AF. You choose a major based on what you want to do, not what might help the most (ie doing Aero just because it could look impressive if you want to be a pilot, even though you have no interest in it at all).

The purpose of picking a major you enjoy will become very evident once you get into lots of majors classes. If you like your major, you'll have a good time; if not, you might hate your life for a while. :)

Military History for me.

Ah yes, docfrance! I met him last year, he taught Eng 100 next door to my class. :)

Astro, Aero, and Chem are considered the triumvirate of evil majors if that helps your question AZ. It depends on what your AF job is for where you are based. If you take the Astro degree and do satellites or missiles, you may be at Vandenberg in CA, Minot in ND, Maelstrom in Montana, Peterson and Shrever here in Csprings, and a couple others I think. If you go pilot, who knows!
