Hi, I'm just wondering if MSU has sent out invites to eligible class of 2018 to compete for ADS yet? What's the timeline for this scholarship?

Invites were sent a long time ago. The first weekend is already full.

Thanks, FarWestCoast. For my future reference, would you mind sharing when approximately you received the invite? Also, was the invite via MSU portal, email, or snail-mail?

Initially snail-mail and more than a month ago.

My D received her invitation about 3 weeks ago. I think if a student is qualified to be admitted to their Honors College, s/he is invited to the competition.

If you have not received the invitation, please check if you meet their criteria for Honors College. If you do, AND have excellent mid semester grades in 7th semester, please call them to express your interest. Hopefully it may not be too late yet.

On their web site, it states “Rank in the top 5 percent of their high school graduating class. Have an ACT composite score of at least 30 or an SAT score of at least 1360 (Critical Reading plus Math sections only). MSU requires an ACT or SAT with a writing component.
The Honors College may also request additional information, such as 7th semester grades, before extending an invitation to membership”.

Good luck.

Thanks, FarWestCoast.

Thanks, Trinity7, for the extra info. I’ll have my son contact MSU then to check for this late possibility since he has UW-GPA of 4.0 loaded with most rigorous courses available in HS (as well as college courses), and perfect standardized test-scores (ACT, SAT Subject Tests & APs).

We’ve been wondering why he was never even offered to be in Honors College in the acceptance letter that he just received recently (he submitted his EA app before Nov 1 deadline).

His HS does not rank students, and we hope this will not impact MSU’s decision not to choose him to be in Honors College, as well as invited to ADS competition.

Thanks again for the info. We’ll contact MSU ASAP.

Thanks again for your suggestion, Trinity7. My S contacted MSU, and the oversights/ issues (both Honors College & ADS) are resolved now. Only thing is that he’ll have to wait for a few more days – within this week – to get his account activated to register.

My understanding is that there’ll be multiple weekends for the competition, but S forgot to ask which weekends. Would you mind sharing with me the possible dates? I just want to make sure that if there’s any conflict with his other tournament/activity, S would be able to get it resolved sooner, especially if ADS competition is happening anytime soon.

Thanks again!

The competition is on (1) Jan.31-Feb. 1 & (2) Feb. 7-8
Registration details can be accessed at www.admissions.msu.edu/ads

Although the registration was closed for the weekend of my daughter’s choice, the ADS persons were very gracious in accommodating my daughter’s schedule conflict. Hotel reservation at nearby hotels may need to be made separately for the first night since the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center may be booked by now (if you have to drive quite a distance from Lansing). The exam is in the morning of the 2nd day from 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM.

Apart from the competition, since your son has perfect scores, he will be automatically selected for Professorial Assistantship, and get an opportunity to work with leading researchers and earn some stipend. It is a great endeavor!

Trinity7, you mentioned that the exam is on the 2nd day (Saturday). Do you know if the Friday program is a day-long program? Is it (Friday program) optional or required?

In any case, it’s good to know the schedule now since S can’t register just yet; he also happens to have some conflicting schedule on a Friday of one weekend, and a Saturday on the other weekend. So, he can at least try to resolve this issue while waiting for his ADS account to be activated.

Thank you sooooo much again for all the additional info (incl. PA) which have been extremely helpful! You are our life-savers!! :)

Couple of years ago when my oldest had the opportunity to appear for ADS, we found that day 1 activities presented a proper perspective of the opportunities available at various academic departments and at Honors College. Day 1 session starts at 9:45 AM with an hour long welcome session (included show & tell by current Honors students), followed by lunch/visit to a residence hall. The afternoon session consisted of two 45 minute academic presentations at various departments. I think the students had an opportunity to meet with academic advisers. ADS folks had evening session (for students only) starting around 4:45 PM (Honors College presentation), followed by a banquet, and informal receptions by various colleges. While day 1 is not mandatory, it was useful, especially for the students.

Thanks again, Trinity7. Much appreciated!!! :)

You’re so right again, Trinity7. MSU folks are very nice & accommodating of my son’s schedule.

We’re told that there’re quite a few students/families, besides us, who could only make it to the ADS if we could join the day-1 event on 1 weekend, and day-2 test on another weekend. Glad that it all works out albeit plenty of driving (several hours each way to/from MSU) those 2 weekends.

Thanks again for all your tips!

Glad it all worked out. As with all such events, encourage your son to ask critical questions to separate the marketing pitch, and focus on the actual stuff that he might be truly interested in. He can compare MSU with other universities, and make an informed decision suited to his personal needs/aspirations. This is a part of his journey in finding his best “fit”.

S just got the call: full ride! :)

Great news TwentyEighteen! Congratulation to your S. Will it be go green from now on?

Thanks, Trinity7! I’ll always be grateful for your MLK response on Jan-20 that started the ball rolling for S.

MSU is definitely very high up on S’ list. However, he most likely won’t be able to make his final decision until he sees/compares all the other offers later this month or early April.

Hope your D’s doing well and winning ADS scholarship too :)

Thanks TwentyEighteen for asking. Going into ADS my D was aware that she was competing against other students with better stats; while she didn’t win the ADS scholarships, she very much enjoyed the experience. D is now focusing on other schools where she was directly admitted to her program of choice (business), and their scholarships equals the cost of attending MSU. There will be further visits & explorations, and hopefully she will matriculate into a program she is comfortable with, and one we can afford!

With S being my first (and only) child, we’ve been learning along as we go through this very grueling process of college applications. There’ve been many missed opportunities as we weren’t aware of those until it’s too late. And some like this ADS, we would’ve missed it had you not taken the time to respond to my CC inquiry. Thank you so much again, Trinity7!

I wish your D the very best in her search for the right college to matriculate in, and hopefully it’s one she’ll be able to graduate with her degree debt-free too :)

What sort of scholarship opportunities did you miss out on and where did you find the missing information?
