Hi, I was just wondering what my chances would be for Michigan State. Can I consider it a safety or is it a match? I am probably going to be majoring in Political Science and I currently go to a fairly competitive suburban Chicago school. My dad also went to MSU, so I'm a legacy if that matters at all.

Stats:
Unweighted GPA: 3.4
Weighted GPA: 3.8
ACT: 31
Class Rank: Top 15%
The AP Classes/Tests that I have taken are US History (4), US Government, Macroeconomics, Latin Literature, English Language, Human Geography, and I will be taking Calculus AB and Chemistry next year.
My main EC's are Varsity Basketball and Mathletes. I am also in a couple other honorary societies. Thanks.

I would not be so sure to call it a safety (actually, I’m sure I wouldn’t). Friend got rejected with a 3.2 UW (school doesn’t weight) and a 32 ACT.

RON, those are old stats. Believe it or not, admission is getting harder. Less people are going out of state because of the economy so the admission stats are going way up.

Do NOT think of State as a safety. It is a good match, but by no means is it a safety.

Yeah I’d definitely agree that State is a good match, but not a safety given that competition has increased at MSU over the last several years.

Oh and mak53, don’t be surprised if you hear back from MSU again sometime this summer. Even if you are currently not admitted until Spring 2010 right now, MSU may admit you for fall semester (I know of several people that were accepted to fall semester at last minute).

The stats are from MSU’s web site. A 3.4 and 31 is a real strong candidate for admission. This is Michigan State, while a fine college, it is not a U of M.

I guess you are right, MSU should not be considered a ‘safety net’, but there is a very good chance.

RON, you did not read what I said. Those are OLD stats (from a few years ago). The average incoming GPA is ** now ** at about a 3.7 UW and a 28-30 ACT.

And btw, U of M is no longer a U of M. All I’m gonna say.

Coolbrezze, that is exactly why I’m not waiting to hear back for fall/go for spring. Not only will I be behind credit wise, Ill also miss football and basketball seasons. I just don’t understand why MSU is taking kids from other schools with worse stats than kids at my school which is a top public school in Michigan.

You’ll also miss freshmen welcome week, and the beginning of the year for everyone which is part of your college experience. Noway would I attend a university for the first time in spring, and not fall. Fall is a must.
