Most of you know that I have a very low GPA, yet I tend to have strong ACT, ECs, and etc. After applying to MSU, I've become very interested in the honors program at MSU. I've
applied to Calvin's Honors Program and got in, but after reading this post at the MSU Honors
College website I got really worried:

Invitations are usually extended within one month of the MSU admission to high school students who:

Rank in the top 5 percent of their high school graduating class.
Have an ACT composite score of at least 30 or an SAT score of at least 1360 (Critical Reading and Math sections only). MSU requires an ACT or SAT with a writing component. The writing score and sample may be used as additional information in the Honors College screening process.

I DEFINITELY do not rank in the top 5% (considering my 3.1 UW GPA), yet my ACT score ranges over the 30 mark. Do I have a shot at applying, or am I just not eligible?

I don’t know if they allow applications for high school students, but I think it’s safe to say you won’t be extended an invitation beforehand. Sorry, mate. Although you have a semester to apply once you get there, so if you rock your grades for a term, you could definitely get in! After that, though, I’m pretty sure it’s invitation-only, so make sure to take advantage of that window of opportunity.

Though for the record, if I could, I’d give you my invite. Tough break at the U of M forum, man. Good luck if you end up at State!

^^^yeah you aren’t eligible to get an invite with your stats now, but if you are in the top 10% of your major (college) 1st semester your freshman year at MSU you can get into the honors college that way. Also, each college within the university has their own honors program for specific majors.

You must meet both of the requirements to be accepted to the Honors College. The Honors College is by invitation only, so you cannot apply. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me- I am in the Honors College.

but in the calvin college honors program, you could still apply even if you didnt fufill the requirements for any one of the conditions

MSU is not Calvin College. It is invitation-only. There is no application.

If you don’t meet BOTH requirements, you will not be invited. There is no other way to be accepted to the Honors College. Every university/college is different. Don’t assume similarities.

Even if you aren’t invited to the honors college, If you were close, you could be invited to join a program called the Academic Scholars Program which “offers enhanced academic opportunities during the the first two years and provides a pathway for those wanting to join the honors college after their first year at MSU”
