scholarships?

i was just wondering when an admitted applicant could expect to find out if MSU gave them any scholarships. do you actually have to enroll first? or is the ADS scholarship competition (do you have to enroll to compete in that?)the only chance one has to get significant scholarship money from MSU?

Hmm, I would like to know as well.

by the way, I got my invitation to the ADS competition today and I'm assuming you did too =] do you plan on going?

i didn't get one yet........ but if i get one, and don't enroll at Uof M before then, i'll go

Some merit scholarships -- the most valuable ones -- haven't been awarded yet. MSU invites a number of applicants to come to MSU in February to take the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship (ADS) exams. From this (and the student's record), some 20 or so students will be awarded full-ride scholarships.

Here's a list of last year's winners: http://newsroom.msu.edu/site/indexer/2446/content.htm

Here's a link to general information about these scholarships: http://admissions.msu.edu/Undergraduate_Scholarships.asp

yay! got my invitation today for ADS.

I haven't got any info on scholarships, but judging from the MSU website, i'd only be eligible for a few small scholarships.

One of my friends won the ADS award last year (she's on that webpage) and absolutely hates it at MSU.

dsmo--Since so many kids go to MSU every year from our high school (my son not included), I'm really curious to know what your friend hates about it. Will she give up the scholarship and transfer?

LOL, I did a campus visit up there and I hate it, but again, I grew up in AA. I just applied there as a super safety and hopefully to get a scholarship.

That's too bad dsmo, but it happens. College is a very personal thing. I just hope, in your statement, you're not suggesting that very bright students, generally, are going to dislike MSU based on this one ADS student, because there are many more who really love the place.

At the same time, I would caution anyone not to attend MSU just because of whether or not you receive sufficient scholarship $$$$. First, there are plenty of other positive reasons to attend MSU besides money. It’s a good school and a fun school. Secondly, if you've made up your mind you really don't want to go to MSU, a nice scholarship award's not going to change that. It'll be 4 years of hell. You really need to look in the mirror and decide what YOU want: not what your parents want or what the kids down the hall are doing. It's got to be a good fit for you, otherwise you should look elsewhere.
