MSU vs IU

Deciding between Michigan State and Indiana. Going into business, and a Michigan resident. Which would you guys do?

Are you a pre-admit to Kelly
Can you afford Indiana?

What is the bottom line cost for each?

Yes I am a direct admit, Indiana is 35k and Michigan is 20k for me

MSU- 20k
IU-35k

Indiana absolutely dominates Michigan State in Business. If you don’t have to take out loans or only have to take very little loans, Kelly is worth it. Kelly direct admit is nothing to sneeze at.

I can afford about 20k, so at Indiana I would take about 15k in loans

Ignore the rankings and look at the data (and the cost)…

As an example, in Iowa, the U Iowa ‘dominates’ Iowa State in the business school rankings. But then when you analyze the data, you see little difference in ultimate outcomes for students. Iowa State actually has a higher placement rate for their grads (and a much better career services dept than U Iowa), Iowa State grads have a slightly higher initial average salary than U Iowa, both schools have the exact same avg initial salary for accting grads.

Check the career placement data for both schools. I suspect that IU may place a few more students with ‘prestigious’ financial or consulting firms but after that, I am guessing the difference is minimal.

I would save your money and probably go to MSU. Odds are that in the long run it won’t matter which school you go to.

Oh, and $60,000 in loans is silly.

And as a side note, the 2 best business school faculty that I have ever known are from MSU. One is on the accting faculty and the other received her undergard and PhD from MSU.

I would definitely prefer IU, especially for business. Do you want to live and work outside of Michigan after graduation? That might play into your decision. Nothing wrong with Michigan State, but Kelley definitely has the edge and is getting better all the time.

Kelley is not worth 60k in loans.
