@CalDad3 – IMHO, CMU is far LESS “reachy” than a couple of your S’s other acceptances, and his rejection there is just yet-another perfect illustration of the lottery nature of acceptance into top programs.

We know several folks who were admitted to CMU who were rejected from Northwestern, UMich and CCM, for example.

In fact I just spoke on Saturday to one of D’s friends whose dream school was NU (she was a cherub), she was rejected there but accepted to CMU and Roosevelt, and she’s choosing Roosevelt because she really wants to be near Chicago.

This process is so complex, but as others have said somehow the kids for the most part seem to land where they’re meant to be.

I hear what you’re saying, but don’t completely agree since ALL of the kids D knows who are going to NU, for example, also auditioned and were accepted to many of the top BFA programs. Also, many kids with near-perfect stats were rejected this year at NU, so it seems to have come down to “audition by resume” in at least some cases that we are personally aware of.

Not all non-audition BA programs are created equal, and in some ways the end-of-year MT auditions at NU aren’t altogether unlike review-based BFAs, as all they do is channel some people toward a few different courses.

Based on my understanding, the BA to BFA spectrum is nowhere near as black-and-white as I had initially assumed, and in large part certain BA programs are drawing on EXACTLY the same talent pool as the BFA programs.

I know this doesn’t belong in the rejections thread, but the acceptances thread doesn’t really allow room for expansion and I feel like you guys are the people I’m most acquainted with (sort of) by now!

Just got my Hartt acceptance with a talent scholarship! I absolutely cannot believe it…after six rejections, I got in somewhere! And to a BFA MT program in a conservatory! Not sure how I’m going to pay for it, but it is leaps and bounds above my other options right now.

Still waiting on UNCSA and BoCo, but I just feel so, so much better. It’s really funny, since, before I opened the Hartt letter, I prepared myself for a rejection better than I ever have before. Was I ever surprised…

So, yeah. Six rejections in a row doesn’t mean anything. ;-)

Hooorah, I am SoSo happy for you!!! And I do think your proof that the right school can still fall into place after some rejections absolutely has a place in this thread!

MomCares you are exactly right. I didn’t mean to imply CMU was the “best” or most selective school he auditioned for. I totally agree with you that there are many many schools with different characteristics and criteria. More than anything we thought he would have the biggest challenge to be accepted there because he had never had any real contact with anyone from the school in any context (e.g. Summer programs, master classes, etc) so he was more of an unknown there than other schools he chose to audition for. Not that prior exposure is at all a prerequisite, but at least he knew more what some of the other schools expected. He is an excellent student and so we hoped for an acceptance at Northwestern, but we certainly know that GPAs don’t guarantee anything at a school as selective at NU. Hope I’m not digging myself deeper into a hole here other than to say I totally agree with you and didn’t intend to cast dispersions on ANY school by contrast.

My daughter was rejected from most programs, including CCM, Penn State, Ithaca, OCU, Syracuse, Point Park, U Arts, Hartt. Accepted into Catholic and U Colorado Boulder. Accepted into Wagner but not for theater performance (but with a nice music scholarship just for singing). Also accepted into some of these other colleges but won’t go without getting into the program. Everyone should keep the faith – the competition is unbelievable, but I think if they love it, they’ll succeed.

My S was rejected by Ithaca and Point Park, here’s the killer though he was accepted by Suny Buffalo’s theatre department for MT BFA but not academically by the school. Both my S and the theatre department appealed the decision, the theatre department said he was a top choice of the MT department head. Admissions weren’t impressed and didn’t change their decision. Fortunately he was also accepted by Suny Cortland MT and the school, so he’s ok.

I had thought about starting a new thread for 2012 MT rejections, but personally I find that reading through past years and the roller coaster ups and downs is actually very encouraging and/or at least informative, so I figured I’d just bump this thread so we can start for this year. If the mods (or anyone else, for that matter) feel differently, feel free to start a new thread and I’ll re-post there.

REJECTIONS 2012-I think its very helpful if people post the dates they auditioned and the dates they received their rejection, as well as how it arrived, so I’m going to start that trend and hope others will follow suit.

D’s rejections so far
Coastal Carolina-auditioned 11/12 on campus, rejected 12/8 via email, followed up with a letter
Penn State-auditioned 2/6 at Chicago Unifieds, rejected 2/11 via letter. We knew already, though, because D was not called back to dance.

rejections, sigh…
Elon, auditioned on campus early Nov and letter came in December
Michigan and Oklahoma, didn’t pass pre-screen
Penn State-Chicago Unified- coughed through audition for some strange reason (fine outside room) so letter came yesterday. No surprise.
Hoping for good news…

Good news will come for all of you! I just went back and read my painful rejection posts from two years ago. Rough! But it’s all worth it in the end.

Alexa, the chronicle of your journey is one of the reasons I thought it would be good to keep this year’s rejection thread together with last year’s. It’s SUCH an encouraging story!

D has already received 2 acceptances she’s happy with and we’re anxiously awaiting news from her very favorite. We have reason to believe the news will be good but we won’t rejoice until it’s official, of course!

It’s hard to maintain perspective when rejections arrive, but remember that at every top MT program – even including programs like Northwestern’s BA – well over 90% of all applicants get rejections, so you can be sure you are in VERY talented company.

As they say, you can only attend one school and based on past years most people land where they really belong. I’ve always found a lot of truth in the saying that “when the student is ready the teacher appears”, and the best teachers for you are waiting for you at your future school.

I am so excited for all of you during these final weeks of your process!

Rejected at Texas State and Coastal Carolina, but I’m not terribly worried. It is what it is, you know? And when it comes to mainstage or professional productions, you only have to be the best once…

When people got their decisions for Point Park, how did your admissions status on the website look? Just wondering because I have been anxious ever since I auditioned on the 5th.

I auditioned for Point Park on January 21 and received my acceptance letter yesterday. However, when I had checked point web before it stated that I had just been accepted academically and there was no notice of my artistic acceptance.

In the past 2 years I’ve been rejected from Ithaca, North Carolina School of the Arts, and Roosevelt, but it the meantime I went to community college and finished up my AA. Still waiting to hear back from DePaul.

On a happier note I have been accepted to Columbia College for MT and Pacific Lutheran University for a BA in Theatre.
