I’m definitely showing my age here as I remember the first time I ever saw MTV which began airing August 1, 1981. We didn’t get it on our cable channel in San Diego until April of 1982. I remember my college roommates and I returned from spring break to our apartment and turned on our TV and there was MTV. We didn’t turn our TV off all day that day even when we were at class. We would have the TV on and play the sound through our stereo. We loved music and would have MTV on in the background constantly while we were studying or just hanging out. It’s so funny now to watch the old music videos on YouTube as they were not slick and well produced as the videos were in the years to come.
As someone who grew up in Southern California I spent all the money I earned working before leaving for college to go to concerts in LA. Music has always been a huge part of my life and it’s funny to think how revolutionary MTV was at time. And how could it possibly have began 41 years ago - I’m not that old!
Is MTV even around these days? Or as the haute intellectuels in my college referred to it as “Empty-vee”.
Wonderful! Am a huge Atari fan myself. Lost countless hours and GPA points to the 2600 and the Atari 800 (I recently purchased an old one, which I have never gotten around to setting up.) One of the good things that came out from my obsession with my computers in the early 1980s was that I taught myself machine language and Assembly language programming. I have never taken a CS class, but that really helped me understand technology way back then, when I had a 300 baud modem to dial into Compuserve and a “letter quality” Atari printer that took about 8 minutes a page to print!
Martha Quinn was our next door neighbor in NYC. She knocked on our door looking for her cat – we had adjoining roof top decks. Lived in a very cool building. Don Imus was also on our floor and I spotted Martin and Charlie Sheen in the elevator when they were filming Wall Street. Maybe someone should start a thread on celebrity sightings!
If MTV still played videos, I would have it on while I play on my phone on the couch – for the background noise and an occasional glance at the vids. Alas, they haven’t really been in the video business for about 25 years now.
@prezbucky I would do the same if they still showed videos. That’s what we used to love about MTV back in the day. We would keep it on like you would a radio station.
