Muhlenberg

YAY for abparent’s D!!! Welcome to the Muhlenberg family!

Hi all!
I just want to thank everyone for their great info on this program. When I saw it for the first time a year ago, I felt it was perfect for my D all the way around. From their strong dance program, to the theatre facilities, to the psych. dept. and the ability to double major in theatre, and something more substantial. Unfortunately, my D decided Allentown wasn’t for her. If we could have transported this school closer to NYC, then it would have been perfect for her! I want to wish all of you who have accepted their positions at this school good luck with their future plans and a very happy next 4 years!;)

When you think about it, our kids have to be happy with their choice. After all, they are the ones attending. So to all you parents who aren’t happy with their child’s final decision, remember, this is their first step into young adulthood, and the beginning of many decisions that we won’t always like. Our job is to support them through it all. And to pick up the pieces when things fall apart, and help them put it back together, and make the best of the outcomes. If we have done our jobs right, no matter what our kids chose, they will make the most of their choices and be successful where ever they end up!!! Because that’s what we strive for and instill in them when they are children. Make the most out of what you have, and go as far as you can as long as their is room to grow.
I hope everyone keeps in touch and let’s us know how their kids are doing! I know I will continue to update on the great things to come. I will be posting on the Wagner site. She has found a roommate and she is off and running!

sashumom-thank you for your posts…muhlenberg and wagner are my first two choices for next year (i’m a junior)too!!!please keep us updated on your daughter!!! Hope she has a great college experience!

Hi littlemermaid-
I wish only good things for you and your parents this coming year. Our college search started last summer when we went to Chicago to start looking at our first schools. That was when MT came into the picture. My D’s original plan was to become a physical therapist for dancers. (She has danced at a high level since the age of 4 with many injuries along the way). When she decided to go after an MT program, that was when the private voice lessons started. So late, but better late than never. After going thru 4 voice teachers, and 2 acting teachers, she felt comfortable enough to start her auditions in February. This is way too late!!! If you can manage to start Nov-Dec, do so. And if you can manage a couple of trial auditions to schools you have no interest in going to, it is great practice. (And you might just find a great school by accident). We were only able to fit in 5 auditions, plus applied to 4 non audition based programs. Definitely not enough audition based programs- if you can manage it, go for 10. We applied to Elon, and Syracuse, but were unable to get to their auditions, and unifieds fill up quickly, so planning early will help you fit everything in. And I agree with some other posters, fit in as many unifieds as you can, and if you get into the schools, then spend the money and visit. Try overnite visits with students if allowed. And check into early action. We didn’t know some schools had this option. It’s different from early decision. And most of all, enjoy your college search adventure!!! Have fun, meet lots of people, and keep an open mind! Enjoy your coming year littlemermaid, don’t stress out, breathe, have FUN, and Break a leg!

thank you so much for your advice!!

abparent - I don’t check the Muhlenberg MT forum very often anymore, so I’m just now reading this. Congratulations! I’m sure you all breathed a sigh of relief. Please let me know if you have any more questions, although my daughter will be studying abroad in the fall. However, she is there this summer, taking summer school… could not get her to leave Allentown and come home. Now if she can just find a job this summer.

Just to give your daughter a head’s up on alternative performing options. Through a friend in her a cappella group, my daughter was given a head’s up on a musical that was being done at the Civic Theatre of Allentown; it’s probably less than a mile from campus. So D auditioned and was cast; the show ran a couple of weeks ago (actually for two weekends), and we flew out to see it. She really enjoyed the group of people she worked with (and I have to say the male lead made my heart flutter), and the opportunity to work with a different director, in a different setting. Although she will be auditioning for Muhlenberg spring shows before she leaves for London, she is already a bit eager for the Civic Theatre again as they are doing Rent next spring.

Thanks, teriwtt

I’ll be sure to let her know about the opportunities. She’s really looking forward to the fall! Enjoy your summer and wish your daughter well for us.

I am currently a sophomore in a JC out in California wanting to study musical theatre along with other subjects. Musical theatre is my passion and I strive to become an actor but also realize the reality of the business and so I have decided on becoming a casting director. Muhlenberg was never a school I looked into, just happened to come up in my search. I requested some info from their website and have gotten it as well as the whole application. I guess long story short, I am looking for a good musical theatre program or acting and voice program but want to most likely double major in Business or Communications or a major and a minor. Does anyone have any insight of double majoring in MT and Business at Muhlenber. Are double majors encouraged? Also, how is the campus and whats located around it? How is campus life, looking for complete honest. Parties, no parties, greek life, complete boredom? I wanna do numerous things in college and have a great time while doing it and living in Cali its hard to travel around to schools on the east coast. Any insight would be great! Thanks.

AwaitingEv - There are many parents of Muhlenberg students as well as some students themselves who post on this board you can contact through email or PM.

My DD is a highschool senior and we visited Muhlenberg last summer and she loved the school and the head of the theatre program Charlie Richter. You can contact him directly and he will answer questions for you also.

We live in SoCal and DD loved the campus and is very interested in possibly attending.

Hey AwaitingEv- I’m a sophomore at Berg, and I’ll try to answer some of your questions. First of all, there’s not a specific musical theater program here. What most people who are interested in MT do is double major in Theater/Dance or Theater/Music, or major in theater and double minor in dance/music. But since you’re interested in business as well, you can also take voice lessons and dance classes without majoring in music or dance (that’s what I do). I know a lot of people with double majors, or a major and a double minor- it’s definitely encouraged.

Berg is not a huge party school, but if you want to go out, you’ll definitely be able to find parties fairly easily. As for off-campus stuff, well, there’s a Rita’s within walking distance, and the student shuttle will drive almost anywhere in the area. It’s definitely not like NYC where you can walk a block and find a ton of stuff to do away from school, but there are things in Allentown to do. I definitely recommend visiting, if you can. Hope this was helpful (:

hi, I was wondering if Muhlenberg would be a good place to attend as a transfer student looking to stay with musical and straight theater

Yuanyuan. Muhlenberg is a great school, and they do take transfers. I believe on another thread you said you wanted to keep up with a Chinese major. It is possible to double major at Muhlenberg, and many students do. I am not sure, however if they offer a major in Chinese. Best to visit the school website and see if they offer the major you want. As for theatre and MT training my D has been very happy there.

If my recollection is incorrect, and I manufactured the major in Chinese, I apologize!

Yanyuan,

I do think you should explore Muhlenberg. Our daughter transferred from another strong liberal arts school after deciding to pursue theatre as a major. All of her credits transferred and they’ve been very good about alerting her on requirements so that she’ll graduate as class of 2012. So far it seems manageable and she may also be able to still fit in study abroad. As above, I’m not sure about the Chinese major, but we’re aware of many who do double major.

I agree that you should check out the website and/or contact them directly. They are usually very helpful about the info gathering process. If I can be of any further help, feel free to contact me directly. Good luck to you!

Does this thread apply to the whole musical theatre department, like including dance majors, or is it strickly a musical theatre major thread?

I applied as a dance major but was interested in double majoring in theatre, but i didnt know how to really not that on the application so idk if i can. Either way, my priority is dance so…

Since Muhlenberg doesn’t technically have a Musical Theatre degree, I think you are in the right place! All of the “MT” students create their degree by double majoring or majoring and double minoring. So you fit right in by wanting to double major in dance and theatre!
