multiple enrollment fees- URGENT!!

so i have a question. i got accepted to umich and BU, but im on the wait list for nyu. am i allowed to pay the enrollment fees for both umich and BU to "reserve a spot"? or am i allowed to pay for one college?

and also, if i get off nyu's waitlist and decide to go there, am i allowed to get a refund for the enrollment fees from umich and BU?

You are not allowed to deposit to both schools. Some people do, so that they can have more time to decide, but it can be risky.

Deposits are generally nonrefundable. You can decide not to go, but they get to keep the deposit.

Also, it’s unfair to the people who are on waitlists at the schools whose enrollment lists you’d be sitting on after the deposit. Pick between UMich and BU and deposit to the one that you want to go to more. If you do end up getting off of NYU’s waitlist (never plan your future around getting off a waitlist though), then consider losing your deposit at the school that you chose and going to NYU.

BillyMC, why is it risky? is it illegal?

If schools somehow found out that you deposited to more than one school and wasted their time and resources, I’m sure they would not be happy and might rescind their admission offer. Seriously. Don’t game the system; pick one school.

Take out the “might” and you have your reason right there, OP. Schools will rescind their admissions offer if they find out you’ve double deposited, since that’s how they figure out their enrollment numbers for the next year and fill the rest of their class with the waitlist.

Yeah, I don’t know even know why I said “might”. Double depositing isn’t allowed.

There are many threads on this every year. You can use the search function.

All three of these schools use the Common Application. When you applied, you had to mark an electronic signature in order to submit in which you agreed to the following:

So, you may only deposit to one institution. If you are accepted from a waitlist you may accept and forfeit your original deposit. Logically it really wouldn’t buy you much time. The vast majority of institutions require a final transcript from your hs, and your hs will only send one. If they receive multiple requests from schools for final transcripts red flags are raised and phone calls are made. It also reflects very poorly on the hs to have students double deposit.

Why do you feel that you’re a special case that deserves more time to decide? UM and BU fulfilled their part of the obligation. Now it’s time for you to act maturely and do the same. If not & you double deposit, don’t be surprised if they both rescind you – it’s well within their right to do so.
