Multiple Deposits Issue

Hi everyone. I know that ''double depositing'' is considered unethical and wrong in many fronts, but I have an issue. I recently had an issue with my admissions to my first choice, which was due to an error in my app. Needless to say, my admissions to that university was threatened and my dad decided to pay the enrollment fee to one university and another university in Maryland. He did 2 because there was also a similar issue with another uni app, so he was unsure of the admissions/enrollment prospects there.

Well now, the problem with my first choice has passed and everything is okay. I had already payed the enrollment fee over there and now I am stuck with three universities, each which I am enrolled in. I've heard some cases where universities, upon discovery of this ''double depositing'' may rescind admissions. I want to cancel my enrollment for the emergency universities.

Help, if I call and ask for my admissions to be canceled, then will the admissions officer ask for a reason or will he/she just do it? I could really go for some suggestions for excuses here in case if reasons are needed.

You are just under the May 1 deadline. You have made a decision. Call the two schools, rescind your acceptance. If they ask simply say ‘Another opportunity has become available’. That’s all. You may or may not get back the first two deposits. Make sure your GC knows what school you have chosen. You can do this in a simple email, or in a thank you letter.

Hmm, seems possible. Will they accept it though or will they ask further?

You are telling them ‘No thank you’. They may ask a reason. If they do you simply state ‘Another opportunity has become available’. If they ask if it was a WL you can say ‘No’. If they ask where you can tell them if you want. You don’t owe them anything beyond a ‘No thank you’. I understand your apprehension, I honestly do. Just keep it simple and polite. Make the calls, you will be fine! (AND you are going to feel 100x better when you have closed these loops!).

any other opinions?

I agree with Blueiguana 100%

agree with above but May 1 is approaching fast and furious…do it asap

Not to put a fire under you, but May 1 is Sunday, April 30 Saturday, so many schools will begin to populate their student lists after close of business tomorrow, April 29. You simply want to remove your name from the student lists. The sooner you make the calls, the sooner you can put this behind you and focus on your chosen university!
