Music at JHU

Hello everyone~ My first post :) I'm really glad that there's a board like this that answers many questions...

Anyway, I'm currently applying ED to JHU, and was curious about music at JHU.

Background: Sincerely, I love classical music. I played in extremely selective County, Regional, All-State Bands + Orchestras for all 4 years of my high school career, and I'm currently awaiting acceptance from the All-Eastern Band. Also, a good portion of my extra-curriculars and honors are from the music department.

I know that JHU offers a dual-degree program with Peabody Institution, but my parents don't want me to major or minor in music...But I would still love to participate in a classical band/orchestra. Is this possible at JHU?

JHU, u mean Johns Hopkins? if you do mean that. i recently talked w/ their admission officer...the school doesn't have a big music program, i think the best it has is the pep band, which is mostly for lacrosse games. i'm sure there are smaller, less organized jam sessions though if you're interested in those

What are you TALKING ABOUT? Hopkins has a bunch of music opportunities. First, even if you don't major or minor in music, you can still get private lessons at the Peabody conservatory for credit. There's the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra, which is made up of students, faculty, and community members. They always have concerts with guest artists.

There's the Hopkins Wind Ensemble, which has rehearsals twice a week and concerts each semester. I'm in it, and I love it. The director is hilarious, and everyone there is there because they love music.

There's also the Hopkins Chamber Winds, a smaller division of the HSO. Also, we have a flute choir.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Also, I have a friend who auditioned and is on the Peabody Orchestra (though I don't think there are very many Homewood (Arts&Science and Engineering) students on it)

I just recently responded to a student's questions about music opportunities at Hopkins, and thought I would share my comments to back up what shelly147 and tanman wrote:

"There are a variety of musical opportunities for Hopkins students. In terms of extracurricular involvement, Hopkins offers a variety of musical groups, including bands, ensembles, orchestras, a cappella groups, and choral groups. For more information: <a href="http://web.jhu.edu/studentprograms/homewood_arts/student_arts.html%5B/url%5D">http://web.jhu.edu/studentprograms/homewood_arts/student_arts.html</a>. As an undergraduate student, you can join any on-campus group or try out for any groups at the Peabody Music Conservatory as well.

As far as music studies, Hopkins offers a minor in music. The minor is part of the Homewood Arts Certificate: <a href="http://web.jhu.edu/studentprograms/homewood_arts/artscertificate.html%5B/url%5D">http://web.jhu.edu/studentprograms/homewood_arts/artscertificate.html</a>. Besides this program, students can also take classes and/or private lessons at the Peabody Music Conservatory. There is also a Dual Degree option for students who would like to earn a Bachelors of Music and Bachelors of Arts and Sciences jointly."

Thank you so much everyone! Another reason for me to apply to Johns Hopkins :)
