Music Auditions!!!

Such great news!
Congratulations on your son's Oberlin acceptance.

Let me add my congrats to both of you as well! Very exciting.

pianomon, congrats to your son's acceptance to Oberlin! And thanks for all of your congratulations, I'm quite happy! - I'm going to laugh at Harvard and Yale's rejection letters as the mails come :D

Thank you all. As encouragement for those who may not have auditioned into their first or second choice, this was our son's second try at Oberlin. Much credit must be given to his private teacher at his current school who consoled him last year when he didn't get in at Oberlin. (Son was a dual-enrolled high school senior/college freshman.) He helped him find other potential teachers at UMich and Eastman so he might have choices, but all along agreed that he would probably be happiest at Oberlin. His teacher has been incredibly supportive and encouraging. We are all very relieved that after nearly two years the process may be finished.

Sharing in the happiness -- so very happy to hear all the good news.

Congratulations on the acceptances! My son was rejected by Oberlin, which was one of his top choices. It is not an easy place to get into, that's for sure! Neither is Peabody, although I'm less familiar with it, since my son didn't try there.

Congrats to all!

Our son received his acceptance today for transfer into
Manhattan School of Music for Tuba performance.

It has been his first choice 'forever' and he was very upset with his rejection two years ago. He is quite a different young man (and musician) now and thought his audition this March had gone well.
But the CCers on this forum know the deal with conservatories.....you just never know if they even have room for one more!

Of course, the tuition bill is a BIG deal for our family. He was awarded an unexpected merit award, which certainly will help if he attends.
But the prospect is still daunting.

Sooo, we called him at school and read him all the letters and enclosed forms and told him to celebrate!
The 'how to make it happen' will wait for another day.

P.S. His father attended MSM 35 years ago so now they have another bond.

Congrats to your S, musicmom. How wonderful when dreams come true! That unexpected merit aid is icing on the cake.

musicmom- Congratulations to your son on both the transfer acceptance and merit award. He must have really wowed them! How neat to share that bond with his father. I can just imagine the excitement of the phone call as you read the entire letter to him.

I sent our son's package to him at school today so he can have the pleasure of completing the enrollment card and writing the deposit check from his own account. He can't wait!

Thanks binx and Pianomom.

Pianomom-
It seems our son's have traveled similar paths.
Bet they both are savoring it now. Best luck to your son at Oberlin.

That is great news Musicmom. Congrats to you both - to him for getting in and to you for doing all the things that we music parents must figure out how to do!

Congratulations to EVERYONE here...nice choices you all have!!!

Ditto that. Keep us posted next year!

DS just received two large envelopes from the Manhattan School of Music and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Of course, I cannot open them, but I had to share the news! I am so thrilled, and so relieved....

Great news, spelmom!!!

Our son is away at school and had given permission to open envelopes....although I'm not sure his father would have had your restraint if he hadn't!

Congratulations to your son, as well Musicmom. I had taken a break from the forum over the weekend after the mail did not come on Saturday and I had not read your post. That is wonderful news for your son and you and I know it must be very gratifying to have persisted and finally realized his goal. The letters have now been open and S received a very substantial merit award from the New School, and not one cent from Manhattan! Of course it would be that way. To make it worse, he got his first choice studio--Bob Mintzer. Oh, my goodness, the poverty that awaits my poor husband and me.....But I couldn't be happier for him, he has worked very hard and fortunately, peaked at the right time. Congrats once again to all those accepted, and to those still waiting, hang in there.

Bob Mintzer.. Wow!! Congratulations to your son, spelmom. It certainly sounds as though he peaked at the right moment. What exciting choices he has. Congrats to all of the students and parents for making it this far.

spelmom-

So is Bob Mintzer at MSM? (Excuse my ignorance...I'm immersed in tubaland!) And shouldn't there be some magical way to move New School's money over to Manhattan???

So wonderful that your son's hard work has been rewarded!

Pianomom,

Thanks so much! It is so good to be able to share with people who know what you have been/are going through

Musicmom,

Yes, indeed Bob Mintzer is on faculty at MSM, along with David Liebman, Joe Temperly, Dick Oatts and Steven Slagle. Great players and, hopefully, great teachers. We did not have any sample lessons (found CC too late to know to do that!) "Tubaland" (lol) must be great. There was a kid last year in S's jazz ensemble that played some awesome solos on tuba. Maybe your S might be interested in the jazz philharmonic.

Oh, and if only we could transfer the money--geez! It was kinda sad, my son read the two letters and instead of bouncing off the walls with glee (which I was), he just sighed and said, "it's looking like New School", with it being all so apparent where his heart is. But as I said to someone else, broke is broke--after a certain point it kinda doesn't matter--this S is our last, so four more years of peanut butter and jelly and I guess we're done!
