Music @ Brown

Ok, I know it is iffy whether or not this should be in the 2010 thread, but I figured I’d ask and if I get some flak I’ll move.

I was wondering what opportunities there will be to play music at Brown. I play the drums, and I’m sure there are tonnes (Canadian spelling  ) of musicians on campus.

But, from my visits and what I’ve heard, the opportunities to play are…specific. By this I mean that to get involved in the school musically, you either have to be in “the jazz band” or “the marching band” or whatever other bands they have there.

If I just want to play some good 'ol rock music, will I be able to? (and will there be drums?) Is it easy to form a band and play at Brown or somewhere off-campus?

Also, I have heard crazy things about The Brown Band and their quirkiness. I consider myself kind of quirky, but clearly quirky people come in many varieties. What are the band member like at Brown? Are they considered losers who only have friends in the band? Are they fun people to be around?

Ok I’m done now.

ted leo played the day after adoch... good times

if you're good at drums, please do marching band, at every football game I was horribly dissapointed by how much better all the other ivy league drumlines are than ours.

The main reason the band is considered to be so quirky (imo) is because they aren't a traditional marching band. The few people I know who do band have lots of friends outside of band.

My daughter will be attending Brown in September. It was my HS lead guitarist (MK, a 1982 Brown alumnus) who influenced that decision. I visited him at Brown occasionally during our college years and made a few friends among the musicians there. Though I can’t tell you what things are like now, back then there was a very active music scene…

There were quite a few student bands (various styles) that played local clubs. MK was active both playing & recording his bands at the Brown studios. His house on Benevolent St. (spelling?) had a bank vault that they used for practice sessions (a 1950’s Cold War bomb shelter put to better use). MK’s drummer -- a RISD student -- was a huge Rush fan & actually created some of the art work that Rush projected during their shows.

In fact, one of MK’s female classmates currently plays in a Zep tribute band (almost 25 years later): http://www.lezzeppelin.com. Providence is a decent sized city with several local colleges. I have no doubt that the music scene is still reasonably active. Whether you can find a place to store your drum kit & practice is another story. I would get in touch with the music dept. If I hadn’t asked loads of questions when I started college (SUNY/Albany – not Brown) I would never have found out that there were places to both store my kit & practice.
