Hi, I'm currently a freshman at Purdue University looking to transfer for next year. I would like to pursue a career in the music industry working with a record company, that type of thing. Im kinda confused on what to major in to get to that point though (Music Business, Business, or some type of Engineering??) I'm also unsure about what schools would be best for this major. Is it better to be in a big city for this major too?

Some prior discussions and a number of schools mentioned in these threads: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=398677&highlight=music+business

A friend of mine has a son who is a freshman at Syracuse. They have a brand new music business program which sounds quite amazing. It is funded by an alum who is someone famous in the recording industry (who I didn't know) and has included some wonderful field trips to NYC.

Someone interested in music business should look at Belmont in Nashville. It is a very strong program, largely funded and named after Mike Curb of Curb Records in Nashville.

Loyola University New Orleans

Does anyone know anything about the University of Miamis music business program? do you have do audition or anything for it?

Based on the info and links here How to Apply | University of Miami, yes it is an audition based program.

Frost has a good reputation for music. I have no specific knowledge of this major and how it compares to other offerings.

If it's the B.M. in Music Business and Entertainment Industries degree offered at Frost School of Music, you have to audition. From their FAQ's:

"Q. What if I’m applying for a non-performance degree; do I still have to audition?
A. Yes. Every applicant, regardless of degree choice, must complete an audition in order to be considered for admission to the Frost School of Music. "
