looking for some suggestions for a good music ed program, South or Mid-Atlantic preferred, for a singer/flute player who is up for a challenging program, but with somewhat less competitive spirit than a performance degree.

Susquehanna or Gettysburg, both in PA, might be worth a look.

Are you looking for a vocal track, Instrumental track or a blend?

Hi BeezMom, more vocal than instrumental; Thanks stradmom, Susquhanna looks great!

nycm, if you have questions about Susquehanna, please feel free to PM me. My son is a senior there now (not a music major) and my wife is an alum of their Music Ed program.

James Madison University, VA…

Often Music Ed. students will go to school in the state where they would like to first teach when they graduate.

Also – often the state universities will have very strong Music Ed programs.

NYCM - sorry for the delay in getting back to you. For music Ed/Choral, my D loves the program at Westminster. It is definitely a love it or hate it school - Quite small, more conservatory feel than university feel (no matter what Rider tries to say!), but for developing a group bond, and outstanding education background, it is terrific. It is a challenging program - PM me if you would like more info.
Another school recommended to my D was Hayes SOM at Appalachian State. I was told that it had nurturing teachers and a great environment. Other schools recommended were U Maryland/more of an honors program, and U Delaware. I’ve also known talented kids who went to TCNJ and have also seen some strong teachers graduate from there. Unfortunately, I can’t give you any first hand knowledge - my D went to camp at Westminster, and it was pretty much all over after that!

If you decide to look past south/mid-atlantic…I go to Illinois Wesleyan University, and we have big Music Ed program. Lots of Music Ed majors, and lots of voice majors too, so probably what you’re looking for, and they brag about a 100% placement rate for Music Ed majors when they graduate ([Illinois Wesleyan: Music Education FAQ](School of Music Departments | Illinois Wesleyan) and http://www.iwu.edu/music/academics/bme.shtml). I’m not in the Music Ed program (I’m in performance), but I could answer more general questions about the program for you probably.

I’d have to doubt any claim of 100% placement rate for a teacher in the arts. Maybe they do find jobs, but can they keep them, given that music and art programs are always the first to be cut whenever school budgets are pared.
Seconding BeezMom on the quality of Music Ed at WCC though. It’s one of the most rigorous programs anywhere but teachers coming out of there will have no problem with graduate school and passing certification tests!
