Hey guys, I heard that this was a thing and was wondering how the questions looked like. I have a pretty extensive music history background (thank you Academic Decathlon) and when I read some of the composers/topics in the academic planning guide I feel like I might be able to pass it. Has anyone here taken it and would like to shed some light on what kind of content is on the test?
I don’t know whether you can place out of Music Hum, but even if you can, I’d encourage you not to. It’s a great course. My son had an extensive music background coming into Columbia and absolutely loved Music Hum.
I don’t think you should place out because it’s part of the Columbia experience (plus it might help your GPA while you’re there, honestly). If you’d seriously consider placing out without being an absolute music fanatic, Columbia might not be the place for you–the Core is a HUGE part of your Columbia experience. It’s supposed to be a great class too. If you want to get it over with early, though, put music as a prospective major and you’ll have a higher chance of getting into a section of Music Hum your first semester as a Freshman
