Hello, I’m currently looking for schools that have a Music Industry/Business major. The problem is I’m trying to find schools near the NYC/NJ area that offers this program and DO NOT require an audition. I’m a beginner at the guitar but not that good and most majors in this field are concentrations so I have to know how to read music etc and I’m just trying to find a school that solely focuses on the business aspect.
I’ve been looking into Five Towns but the reviews say it’s terrible? Also Ramapo but apparently you need to audition?
If you’re willing to go south, Middle Tennessee State University has a degree in Recording Industry Management, Recording Industry Audio Production and Songwriting. It is in Murfreesboro, which is about 30 minutes from Nashville.
There is also a program at Belmont–The Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business at Belmont University. It was funded by Mike Curb who used to be president of MGM Records. Belmont is where several country music stars went to school: Brad Paisley, Trisha Yearwood, the guys in Florida Georgia Line, Lee Ann Womack, etc.
What about Drexel? I think Loyola-Maryland might have something. UArts, in Philly, has a program in Music Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology. They don’t require an audition, but they do require an interview (via Skype if you live more than 500 miles from Philly) and some sort of portfolio showing the sort of work you have done and can do. http://www.uarts.edu/admissions/college-performing-arts-audition-requirements#music.
The music industry is an incredibly broad field which incorporates everything from marketing, operations management (how do you think concerts are coordinated), accounting, and analytics. Before searching for schools which have that major, I would try to get in contract with industry professionals to see how they got their current roles.
Kimmah, we just went through this! Not to worry. I am here to guide you! Here you go…
Music industry/business programs with no auditions in NYC area
University of New Haven…my D will start there in Fall. Awesome program and equipment. Focus is on Experiential education and internships. plus, you can live in a dorm with music industry, music production and music majors. near the beach and close to NY. They give merit money. They are starting a semester away program at one of the major recording studios in Nashville. Seriously, check it out.
Monmouth University…Gorgeous school (Annie was filmed there and the administration bldg was Daddy Warbucks mansion!) Great program, but their music studio is currently off site in Asbury park. but, so cool for the shore music scene…plus some of the dorms are actually on the beach. Very commutable to NY. they give merit, too.
Ramapo College…They have a solid music business program. they claimed they are building a new on site studio when we toured in the spring, but I’m not sure where they are with that so I’d check. D’s boyfriend is going to go there. we decided against it, despite an almost full ride as I was concerned about them being in the news lately. It’s a state school so it’s got lovely, new buldings.
Manhattanville College…lovely little school in near White Plains, near SUNY Purchase (who unfortunately doesn’t have music Industry program) with weekend shuttle to NY. Closest to NYC I think. Problem is music facilities…with no plans to upgrade or to outsource, like Monmouth did. They just changed their music management program to music bs this year and are not requiring auditions. they give merit as well.
Rider…they don’t have music industry but a major in performing Arts management, with a focus on music. plus, they have a Popular Music minor. The PA Management major is a bit broader. I liked it…my D wanted to just focus on music itself so it was a no go. But, also a lovely little school. And again, they give merit.
And like the prior poster said, there’s Drexel and U Arts in Philly.
