Music Lovers...I need your help!

I need to find a good song with poetic lyrics for my AP Language class. My assignment is to find a song and a poem that are similar in several ways. I'm going to have to rip the lyrics apart and analyze them to pieces, which is why I want to avoid using any of my personal favorites.

*keep in mind that I have to play the song in front of my class during a presentation...so please don't give me anything that will get me in trouble :)

...any recommendations?

Songs from Broadway shows are usually pretty straightforward if you wanna try one of those...

Well, I don't want lyrics that are too straightforward, because that gives me less to analyze...but thanks for the suggestion, anyways

How about something by Pink Floyd?

Look at Time, Dogs, or Breathe for great lyrics.

A music site I write for recently voted the greatest lyrical performance ever to be Desolation Row, by Bob Dylan, for what's it's worth. I agree with this vote. Time was second.

Pink Floyd - Time

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
And You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have gone behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in a quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
Its good to warm my bones beside the fire

Far away across the field
the tolling of the iron bell
calls the faithful to their knees
to hear the softly spoken magic spell

Immortal Technique - Dance With the Devil

firewalker...thanks, but playing that in front of my class would be more than a little awkward lol

i just know that this song rhymes

Some Things I Know---Billy Gilman

wow, i did something very similar to this for my English class. I did the poem "To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell and used the song " Till the End of Time" by Mariah Carey.

The similarities I found were that both pieces use exaggeration (in regards to the brevity of time) to get across their point...

i'm not sure if that is enough to do a project about, though.

Almost anything by Remy Shand - jazzy flavor with particularly rich lyrics. He has only put out one album, so it should be easy to obtain all his songs...I promise you wont be dissapointed.

anything emo you can find would work. emo songs just ooze with poetic lyrics.

RENT songs (broadway, but you can analyze stuff like diction and rhyme choice and such to great detail).
-Over The Moon (VERY analyzable... you can compare it to political events and such... there are tons of analyses online... I heard it's about the Oklahoma City bombing?)
-What You Own
-La Vie Boheme (not B)
-Contact (slightly inappropriate...)
-Out Tonight
-Light My Candle
-Glory (kinda simple)

Something Corporate
-Little
-Airplanes/Airports (I've seen it under both names)
-Konstantine
-Cavanaugh Park
-Straw Dog
-Hurricane

Norah Jones
-New York City...?
-Ok so she isn't that analyzable... I'm just in a Norah phase. So sue me. :P

Ahh I envy you. What a fun assignment. I had to do a similar one freshman year and foolishly chose You Wanted More by Tonic cause it was mad easy... Booooooring.

AFI songs... sing the sorrow and the art of drowning [albums] may have the best songs for you. if you want to consider afi.

anything by loreena mckennitt (celtic new age)

or portishead (techno/trip hop)

Use something really boring please.

I think I'm going to go with something by Something Corporate or Dashboard Confessional...thanks to everybody who posted!

A kid in my class did "Hands Down" by Dashboard Confessional.

Something from the musical 'Les Miserables' perhaps. Really poetic and beautiful lyrics. Try the Finale, Bring Him Home, On My Own, I Dreamed a Dream, or Empty Chairs at Empty Tables.:)

I had to do a similar project and I did "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls. It was a pretty good song to interpret, and I don't think it would offend anyone if you played it in class.
