Music scene

Hey, I was just wondering what the music scene is like in Berkeley. Are there a lot of venues that are all ages (or 18+) or is it dominated by 21+? Also, how convenient is it to go into SF for shows without a car? Do students do this a lot? Also, is there a general interest in going to concerts and just talking about music at Berkeley?

Thanks so much

What kind of music are you into?

Going to SF is very convenient - BART can take you pretty much anywhere around the Bay Area.

I'm into indie/rock/alternative stuff and I'm inundated with concert possibilities.

The Onion actually has some of the best listings I've seen for Bay Area music, and it's available to pick up all around Southside Berkeley.

I don't have a car (freshman) and I've been fine going to concerts. Definitely you wouldn't want to go alone and some of the places are a little shadier, but in general BART and MUNI (bus) will take care of you just fine.

Students go to plenty of shows, I've found. Most are 18+; occasionally there are 21+

San Francisco is the main resource for concerts in the Bay Area, but other venues are quite accessible, such as the collesium in Oakland and some places on or near campus. I haven't found that most shows are 18+, but it could just be the type of shows that I go to. It seems like a lot of students listen to music, but unfortunately a good chunk of that consists of what I like to call "bad music." YOu will find many interested in whatever you are, though.

This sounds really good. I'm really into indie/rock/alt and reggae... How is the reggae club in town I've read about? Any good? Also, for the BART and MUNI, do they go late into the night so you don't have to leave early from a show?

Yeah the BART thing is kind of a problem. The last ones run a little before midnight, usually, so you might have to leave before an encore which does suck. I know that there is transbay MUNI that runs all night. Not sure on the details, but I guess if you time it well things will be fine.

Taxi rides are always a possibility. In New York they live on them- it's not that big a deal everyonce in a while, cost wise, if your show ends after 12. Busses run very late (and there is a bus Berkeley students can take for free from SF to Oakland and from Oakland there's one to Berkeley waiting outside of that.

DRab - I'm curious; how much would a cab ride be from, say, Union Square SF to Berkeley?

That's a good question. The bus from SF starts near Union Square, for the record. I would guess (based off of very little) that a cab ride from Union Square to Berkeley would cost $30-$40, divided by the number of passengers.

a cab ride from SF to berkeley is 30 someodd bucks which isnt too bad between 3-4 guys

Go me . . . . . .

For a quick, cheap, study break, consider going to Blakes open mic night on Mondays. Its $3 to get in, $1 before 9pm. And, its just blocks from campus on Telegraph Avenue.

Blakes is a Berkeley institution (<a href="http://www.blakesontelegraph.com/%5B/url%5D">http://www.blakesontelegraph.com/</a>)</p>
