The Indie Scene at Berkeley

Okay, I am an indie kid. I love independent music. Favorite bands range from The Decemberists, to The Shins, to The Flaming Lips (can't forget arcade fire or The Unicorns(I think they changed their name though...)). Oh, I could go on for hours about these great bands. Anyways, the point being, are there a lot of indie kids down there, because I tend to be able to click really well with them. I mean its nice to have some common ground y'know.

Also, do lots of bands play there. I mean I gave up UT Austin for Berkeley. I gave up like the center of indie music, so I'm hoping there is at least a decent indie scene here. I heard there is something called like Noise pop or sumthin, which is a big indie event every year. Are there others like that, do lots of indie bands come down to SF? In austin there was SXSW and ACL which were amazing.

But ya, just wondering if any of you guys knew anything about this sort of thing. Thanks

I'm sure it won't be hard to find the people in tight shirts and jeans who think their musical tastes are superior to everyone elses because they listen to Sufjan Stevens and Neutral Milk Hotel. Hang out at the local music stores and you won't miss em! Interested in "noise pop"? Check out SF's very own Deerhoof, or maybe Lightening Bolt. Bands I have seen at the Berkeley Greek Theater have included The Pixies, The Mars Volta, and Radiohead. If those bands aren't indie enough for you, there are plenty of hole in the wall places and venues. Relax, indie kid! You'll like it here!

hehe, thanks man. Ya, you got it dead on, tight shirts and jeans. Hey! i wear boot cut jeans, lol, but ya you got the tight shirts part right. anyways, thats kool, thanks. Dude, the Pixies and Radiohead played at Berkeley, thats friggin awesome!

well sufjan IS pretty damn awesome.
srsly.

yeah, I like indie music too and the bay area definitely is great for that. Just look up San Francisco on pollstar.com, and you'll find tons of stuff.

There is an annual Noise Pop festival, the line up is pretty decent (nothing like Coachella). Unfortunately it was during spring break this year.

Hey I'm definitely with you! While at orientation, I found a bunch of people who liked the same music as me--indie. And also on Facebook too.

I'm really glad SF is just right there so that means I can hit up the Bottom of the Hill and other venues. We can just take the BART, so I'm glad. If anyone wants to go to shows, hit me up.

<3 Sufjan Stevens.

Thing is, I'm mostly of a hardcore/socal punk kid (mostly bands from the early 80s). I've been trying to get into indie so I don't feel completely out of touch when it comes to the music scene up north.

Asking if there's indie kids at a college (especially in California) is like asking if there's carbs in a donut. It is the nature of the university to harbor indie kids, just as it is the nature of the donut to harbor carbohydrates. PS, may we please stop refering to ourselves so blatantly as "indie kids"? That term is on the verge of achieving the same tired, negative rep as "emo kid" or "goth kid".

INDIES?! Froths at the mouth viciously

Haha, just kidding. You guys are a HUGE STEP above Goths and Emos. ;) You will find plenty to do and plenty of people to meet. Berkeley is extremely eclectic and both Berkeley and SF has a lot of cultural stuff. Welcome and enjoy. :)

Dear fellow CCers,
The Flaming Lips have not been indie for over a decade and Radiohead recently joined the indie world.

P.S.

P.P.S. Radiohead+Deerhoof at Berkeley= HEAVEN

The Unicorns didn't really change their name--a couple of the original memers got together and formed another band, called Islands. They're pretty good.

Islands already also kinda broke up.

So a band can go from not being indie to being indie? Not that anyone has even defined what indie is . . . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_%28music%29

maybe I was a little wrong, maybe not, radiohead still rocks

Heck yes they do! (and that is what really matters . . . at least to me).

:)

Also check out Slims, great club for shows. It is more punk though than indie. Might want to check out Sonic Youths new cd Rather Ripped, indie and way better than some of the bands you mentioned in my opinion. O, and also there is the Warfield for bigger shows.
