Just out of curiosity, but what genre of music do people generally listen to at UChicago?

At colleges where students come from around the country and around the world, there is no expectation of musical taste. I know students who like classical, hip hop, jazz, country, showtunes, ethnic music, etc. One of the transitions from high school to college is that people stop caring what kind of music you listen to. There isn't much stigma attached to different types of music.

supertramp

Feel free to listen to the WHPK webstream: http://www.whpk.org/stream You won't learn much about what University of Chicago students generally listen to, but it will let you hear directly what they don't generally listen to.

http://www.last.fm/group/University+of+Chicago (reflecting maybe 4% of the undergraduate population, except that a bunch of them have probably graduated).

Illustrative actual very recent conversation with my kid:

Dad: So, did you hear anybody new and cool at the Pitchfork Festival [in Chicago, which is where Pitchfork is based]?

Kid: Uh . . . Dad, a festival sponsored by Pitchfork isn't someplace I'm going to hear anybody I didn't already know about.

Hahaha.... this group pretty much reflects my musical tastes. If you walk into Cobb Coffee Shop, they will blare anything from Sonic Youth to Johnny Cash and lots of stuff I don't even know in between.

There are also a considerable number of punk rock fanatics, Red Letter Kill is composed of a bunch of recent U of C grads. They're pretty good.

anyone like bands like circa survive, saosin?

"anyone like bands like circa survive, saosin?"

nope, everyone here only listens to supertramp

Strokes?Llibertines? Arctic Monkeys? Reverend and the Makers? Or not?

Whether people at the school listen to the kind I listen to or not doesn't really matter. No matter what I still want to go there. I was just curious.

Wow that looked really awkward. It's been a long day =T

The music in Bartlett is always fascinating.

ok for a serious answer: it is a large university located in a city. there are people who like every band that you have ever even heard of. as well as the 99% of active bands that you haven't heard of. seriously.

thinkgreen89, i have the biggest soft spot for british bands!

Runforfun21, I have the biggest soft sport for you ;]]. Haha marry me please.

But yeah I have a thing for British bands as you can see.

I heard that they have a Japanese Animation club. If I go there, I'm starting a J-Rock club, and merging with theirs. Yesssss.

Oh, Pitchfork <3.

Good stuff.

haha, thinkgreen89, i'm actually planning to study abroad my junior year at the university of college london to gorge myself with everything british!

Haha wow. I was thinking of doing that as well. Even staying there the summer so I could go to Glastonbury, T in the Park, and Carling Weekend. Just thinking of it makes me excited =]]

First it's a matter of whether or not I get into the school.
