what the social scene like at UIUC?
and how often do national concerts go through the area?
and is it easy to get to Chicago/St. Louis/Indianapolis for a night/weekend?

Do you like corn?

j/k j/k

Mom went there, and I'd kinda like to go there, but OOS tuition is ridiculous, so I'll doubt I end up there.

As a current student, I think the social life is great as long as you don't mind being away from major cities and more in a campus-town environment. Concerts come through frequently. Last week we had OneRepublic, Augustana, and Spill Canvas came to perform. Carrie Underwood was here earlier this year, Jimmy Eat World last year, and The Fray came a few years back.

As for getting to Chicago, there are some really convenient buses that go from U of I to the Chicago suburbs. They stop at local malls and tickets are usually $20-30 each way. There is also a bus that goes to ISU, and the Amtrak seems to go to a good variety of places as well.

There are tons of clubs, organizations, and places to hang out on campus, so if you like the campus-feel to college life rather than a commuter campus or more city-based school, I definitely recommend U of I.

How about employers visits - especially for CS? In UCSD and UCLA, there is a constant stream of employers throughout the year.

easy access to marijuana?

lololololololololololol

Concerts are fine. Huge names don't necessarily come through but RHCP has been here and we especially get a lot of really good comedy acts. Badfish and Girl Talk have been here in the past month, as well as Zoso and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. A lot of cover bands roll through The Canopy Club, and the Piano Man rocks! I go every Tuesday.

I know of two surveys that say that either 75% or 90% of the student body drinks, so expect to consume a lot of alcohol if you want to be socially active here. Lots of companies come through here. IEEE had Intel and Qualcomm here a couple of weeks ago, and those are just the two I knew about.

Finally, yes, there's plenty of weed here.

cooljay136 - ahh i know! i wanted to go to the onerepublic/spill canvas/augustana concert so bad!

oh and last weekend, the USA olympic gymnastic team performed... and Springs proposed to his girlfriend :-p

"Finally, yes, there's plenty of weed here."

ohh yeaah

Well if you aren't into drinking, there is plenty to do too, don't worry. Personally, I sometimes dont feel like drinking and I never have a problem finding something to do. When I do feel like drinking, it is even easier... =)

As far as companies coming through, it is an ENORMOUS amount. There are constantly info sessions and interviews taking place throughout the year, especially in the engineering dept, of which CS is a part. Since CS is top 5 nationwide, pretty much any company you can think of recruits out of if.

Greek life is huge at UIUC, but you can find other things to do if it is not for you. Many bands, concerts, sporting events etc every week. Piano man rocks, and no you don't have to drink there to have a good time. Comedy nights are awesome. I heard B.J. Novak came to UIUC last spring and we actually met Mindy Kaling and Judah Freidlander for the fall comedy night! It is really hard to be bored at uiuc, even if you don't drink.
