I don't want to major or minor in music, but I've been playing piano for about 10 years so I thought it would be nice to be able to send a CD or something in. I know I can do that in the Your Space section and if it isn't amazing it won't hurt me, but what about submitting it to the actual music department? (Vassar College || Guidelines For Optional Art Submissions) If the music professors don't think much of it, would it hurt my chances of getting in? Same question about submitting art slides.

If you submit to the respective departments, I doubt any deficiencies in your ability would play out to harm you. I can’t imagine the department head taking the time to remember your name and contact the admissions personnel to say anything negative. At the same time, the opposite is probably true as well; they might like it a lot and not actually say anything as a result. It’s safest just to go with your gut and put it in your application. Vassar puts the ‘your space’ in their for exactly that reason, and seeing you’ve been playing for ten years, I doubt it would do anything but help.
