Does anybody get a musical theater degree (performance) as well as a traditional BA in a subject like English, political science or biology? Is it even possible to do that?
What do students do who want to get professional theater training but also want the benefit of a traditional liberal arts education?
Thanks.
Students do it. For example, one student completed the BFA and then spent an extra year completing a degree program in the Ross School of Business. It depends on what the student wants to study, how many AP credits the student brings to college, etc. Keep in mind, however, that pursing a BFA at Michigan is very rigorous, with many hours of coursework and rehearsals.
Personally, before I would spend a fifth year in college pursuing an additional BA, I would definitely look into whether it would be possible to earn a master’s degree in that subject instead. There are many master’s programs that are doable in a year or so of continuous study (go winter break, summer’s, etc.) that will allow you to enter without a BA degree, but with say 30 credits in the subject instead. That way, you are not bogged down taking additional requirements towards another BA AND you have a higher level degree in addition to your BFA.
