Musical Theater Prescreens - Class of 2022 (process/response)

@belleforbroadway thanks! I thought I was crazy. I think my daughter did about 5 or 6 and has already failed one so I’m sort of assuming the worst for the remainder. I don’t think she picked good material so I’m looking at this pre-screen process as a way to maybe encourage her to pick something else for the in-person auditions.

My son passed in 10 prescreens and we have heard from 3, All no’s. He has auditioned in person for two schools. He got into one with a scholership and wait listed on the other.

@collegemom2000 make sure your D is allowed to choose different music for the auditions. Some schools on my S list required that students present at least one of the prescreen pieces.

@mommafaria Thanks. What I meant is that I think that if she fails all her prescreens then she should try different material for the auditions that didn’t have prescreens. Those schools won’t know what pieces she used for the screens since they didn’t require them. I’m just thinking a 100% fail rate would suggest a revamp of audition pieces.

I wouldn’t read much into one prescreen “no.”

It is human nature to suffer “recency bias.” Each “no” will elicit fears of all "no"s.

Another problem with prescreen is that you need to act for the camera, which is totally different than the stage. I think that was one advantage to Michigan in that it wanted full-body shots to best replicate the stage.

Some kids (and even professionals) are much better on stage than camera and vice versa.

Be positive @collegemom2000

Thanks @mommafaria I’m just trying to think of how one might use the information constructively moving forward.

@collegemom2000 Does your D have a voice teacher, coach or someone who could advise on song rep? There are stories every year of kids who were either unhappy with some early decisions or the results of prescreens, completely changed their audition materials over Christmas break and got better results in the spring.

My D is changing up some of her rep - and is calling at least one school that wants the same material at callbacks to discuss. I do think it is wise to take a hard look at rep if you are unhappy with prescreen results.

@artskids thanks. Yes she has a voice teacher she has worked with for years. She got her current material from her college audition coaches through one of the major ones everyone here knows about. I think the choices they gave her may be wrong for her. I’m not sure.

@collegemom2000 - Failing one prescreen does not mean she will fail all of them, or that her material is wrong for her. My D passed 8 prescreens and still failed one. “Failing” is part of this process. I wouldn’t be too concerned just yet. There is so much negative thinking around this process, just encouraging you not to get too discouraged so soon. You have a long road yet.

@collegemom2000 yes, like what @belleforbroadway said, it showed up on the checklist in the portal . Hang in there!

This whole process is not for the faint of heart! Thank you to all who have been down this road a little further and try to keep the rest of us sane!

For those awaiting Penn State prescreen results, D received an email through Acceptd that decisions will be delayed until the first week of January.

Has anyone heard from the University of Alabama and turned in a pre-screen for the January date? Wondering if they notify if you pass the pre-screen either way?

Has anyone else had trouble with Shenandoah listing received material accurately? My D uploaded all her videos about 2 weeks ago, received confirmation via email, but her application status still says videos not received. She wrote to them and they basically said “sorry for the inconvenience”. We gave it a few days figuring her email would trigger something…nothing. Still says missing videos. She emailed them again last night…awaiting their response. So frustrating…

D had issues loading her prescreen videos for Shenandoah. She called and they had her change the web browser she was using.

Anybody hear back from Penn State today?

^^^sorry - I realize @jenniferm1973 that your D already auditioned; I thought you were asking about prescreens!

@theaterwork Check out posts #354 and #355 about Shenandoah prescreen issues. Maybe those CC members can help you with your issue uploading?

Thanks @savedrama4momma . I will relay this info to the friend of ours having issues. She’s not on CC.
