Hello, so as for a lot of school's nowadays, you have to submit a pre-screening audition to be accepted for an in-person audition, you all know that! But I was wondering if, when in the actual in-person audition (after getting accepted to the in-person audition), it was alright to do basically the same material in your video?

Please share all of your thoughts! Please and Thank You!

I think some programs specify on their website that it is okay to do that. For example, Texas State University San Marcos says on their website that you can use the same material (plus an extra monologue that you didn’t have to have for the video). So it might depend on the school, although I don’t think I know of any schools that ask you to have all new material break a leg!

I was just wondering if it would be best to have all new material, if that would make my chances of acceptance higher but I am quite fond of my material Thank You steamedartichoke :)

I think that if you have to find all new material NOW, that might not be the best idea because you’d have to get comfortable with more songs and monologues; plus the material you are familiar with already must be very good for you if you’ve been using it all year or longer. If it’s what shows off your talents the best, that’s what you should go with. But maybe other people have other ideas; I’m just a hopeful this year as well, like you, so these are just my rookie opinions :)

Food for thought: Excellent - unique for you - MT Audition material is very hard to find. I can’t imagine that you could not do your pre-screen audition material for the live auditions. 2 years ago my D was able to perform her audition material from the pre-screens at the live auditions (there were not the same number of pre-screen schools as there are today). If you happen to be swimming in a ton of material that you are able to nail - then perform completely different songs and monologues for the live auditions. I would be interested in knowing if there are programs that are asking for different material for the live auditions once you pass the pre-screens. I think that this is a lot to ask for.

I am no expert, but I would think that doing the same material would be wise. Apparently they liked what you did the first time, enough for you to pass the pre-screen. I would be nervous that by doing something different, it may change their opinion of my talent. You may not perform that different monologue as well as the pre-screen one.

We all know that people perform different things in different ways - like American Idol (sorry for the pop reference, but I do see it as a good example). Some of the applicants are asked to perform a different piece and they actually showcase their talent better in that other piece (meaning the first song that they chose didn’t really showcase their true talent).

So, if the pre-screen audition material was good enough to convey your true ability, I say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

ETA: I am a professional actor and have always been told that when I receive a callback, I should dress the same way as the original audition because it obviously worked then! Good luck!
