Must do things before you leave Cal

Entering Cal as a transfer this Fall and I'm pretty stoked to be going. On these boards a while back, I browsed over a list of one hundred things to do at Cornell University before graduating. I was just wondering if their was a comprable list for Cal because the Cornell list captured the spirit of the school well and I just want to get a greater understanding of Cal. Or if there is no list, do you guys have any suggestions of things one must do to fully enjoy the Berkeley experience? Thanks in advance guys =]

There is at least one list that I know about. It's some sort of calendar/book thing, i think free on campus in the first couple weeks, or in the student store. It has 100 items and some put in in the numbered items.

ahhh sweet thanks DRab. I'm prolly going to hunt one of those down during welcome week.

Does anyone else have any more suggestions?

Cheeseboard pizza (often). Top Dog. Sunset from Barrows. Sunset from the Campinile (sp). Hike to the big C.

Get drunk with some homeless people.

"Cheeseboard pizza (often). Top Dog. Sunset from Barrows. Sunset from the Campinile (sp). Hike to the big C."

Haha DRab I heard the pizza is awesome at some places around Berkeley. I'm stoked for the food in general. I haven't really seen an area with such indpendent food places serving high quality, relatively low cost food.

"Get drunk with some homeless people."

HAHAHA, thats a good one GentlemanandScholar. I was perusing the UCB myspace board and it looks like Cal has many famous characters, most of whom are homeless. There was a thread on the myspace UCB forum where Tom speaks of the 'hate man' haha. He's supposedly a former journalist or something. A bit off topic, but basically I'm excited to see many of these wierd people that make Berkeley--"Berkeley". If that means getting drunk with homeless people, I'd jump at the chance...As long as I don't get stabbed, I'm good.

Any more ideas?

Take a class at the Cal Sailing Club
Watch the streakers run through the library during finals
Listen to an a capella group sing on Sproul
Attend the office hours of a professor on a regular basis
Finish a paper early
Finish a paper twenty minutes before it's due
Eat potato puffs at Gregoire's
Browse through books at Moe's, or other independent bookstores in Berkeley (sadly, no more Cody's...)

Great post idea! Keep it coming people.

yup keep em coming current golden bears...haaha perhaps this will help us win the current cross admit battle over transfers with ucla. =]

first of all, what kind of name is CardinalFocused? them's fighting words here...but at least you're going to Cal...

anyways...being an annoying megaphone hog on is an essential part of the Berkeley experience, but rocking the Sproul Steps Soundsystem--that's prime. Join an org that will let you on...its an awesome feeling.

Second, and this is a shameless plug--go to as many culture shows as possible. You're friends will pester you to buy tickets, and it's always a great way to waste 4 hours FOR them.

Yeah, I originally wanted to go to Stanford (which explains the username) but I can't change it now...So maybe I should aspire to go to their gradschool so my username will make sense again...hahaha...Well in any case, haha I'd love to be an "annoying megaphone hog", I bet I'd get a sick enjoyment just having everyone's attention. Culture shows? Do you mean like the underground concerts and whatnot? Well yeah I heard the music scene is big down in San Francisco, I'm just not too sure about the whole hyphy deal.

Oh yeah, I heard CalBears are supposed to get drunk prior to submitting their SIR. I can check that one off my list =]

Culture Shows are put on by the Cultural Organizations on campus, such as the Vietnamese Student Association, the Pilipino American Alliance, Cal Hawaii, etc.

The music scene is interesting...which reminds me, GHOSTRIDE THE WHIP DOWN TELEGRAPH! that's a real bay area experience (not necessarily berkeley though)--it will introduce you to the whole "hyphy" deal.

As for concerts, go to all the free ones you can...you can't beat free..

...getting drunk before submitting your SIR? you can't really do that AT berkeley, but its a great suggestion for future admits.

Interesting, I'm considering joining a cultural association. Perhaps, PAA because I'm of Fillipino descent. Though I'm stoked about being a bear, I'm still have many of the transfer anxieties many of the freshman have. Maybe joining a cultural organization will help me make friends faster and ease the transition into the one of a kind world of Berkeley. Thanks for all the advice, stryet. Maybe I'll see you when I go up to Cal.

Go to the first general meeting that's held by the AAA (Asian American Association) every semester. They're hilarious.

Get your bike stolen. (Dont worry.. this task wont be that hard to complete.. all you have to do is bring a bike)

"Get your bike stolen. (Dont worry.. this task wont be that hard to complete.. all you have to do is bring a bike)"

HAHAHAHAHAH, yeah I hear that happens quite often. They mentioned that on the tour but they said it was mostly a crime of opportunity...like someone is late to class, they see a bike lying unattended on the floor, so they decide that they might as well steal the bike...

No, its not students that steal bikes, its the pro thieves. And unless you have a good bike it wont get stolen. I rock a 30 dollar junker from the Ashby flea market and I never lock it. I've left it there over night and its alway there when I come back. But if you buy a 3,000 dollar bike it will get stolen, no matter what kind of lock you buy.

hahah GAS, I think if you bring a 3,000 dollar bike to Berkeley than perhaps you deserve to get it stolen...Wait nevermind, that sounds cruel.

Gregoire's

where's this?

yea.. it really depends on ur luck too. I've had two bikes stolen in the same week. One was in the dorm courtyard.. and a few days later.. I got another stolen from the bike rack while I was in class at Evans from 5-6... Sure I didnt have the greatest locks, but they werent the greatest bikes either... but hey, what r ya gonna do?
