Must-Have Books For A 2000+

Hello CC'ers how are ya? Hope your studying is going well!

Are there any books you would advise using BESIDES THE BLUE BOOK?

Im weak in CR, and I need a book to help me.

Any books-math and cr- please list them!

Thank you very much :D

I thought dr chungs for math was good and worth some time. Also The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar by erika something is an absolute must have. It goes through every tested rule with examples. That book single handily made me jump 250-300 points on grammar alone.

for math get pwnthesat. It is simply amazing, you’ll easily be getting 700’s in math after working with it

Yeah PWN the SAT is legit for math prep. I also recommend The Essential 500 Words for CR. It helped me a lot a few day ago on the SAT

Erica meltzers book! Check out her website, the critical reader, now!

I’m surprised no one said direct hit 1 and 2 yet

The fact that I ordered pwnthesat and essential math from mcgraw this morning ! Thank you guys! I got grammar down about 90%, I just need to master idioms -no book is needed I think- and if anybody has any links for idioms please let me know!

Any books for multiple choice CR? i suck at cr thanks to my adhd i cant even read a damn passage without thinking of a trillion things

For cr I honestly think that taking practice tests and look at answer explanations, provided by the college board, is the best way to improve. Also you could try lsat reading comprehension as I did as it is much harder and will teach you how to really think critically . Examkrackers for the LSAT cr is worth the money

First of all, no book can be nearly as helpful as the BB. But yes, if you want more practice, try MH SAT. The sample tests are very very accurate. PR’s cracking the SAT is nice, but the level is slightly lower than that of the actual tests. For vocabulary I would say, PR Word Smart, reading just the two hit parades will be enough. If you want some “tips and techniques” , u may want to use Sparknotes SAT. A great book and perhaps the greatest read amongst SAT books.

I’ve went through the SAT sparknotes book, but haven’t found much help for the CR. if anybody has miracle book please comment it !

Bump Bump Bump :frowning: :(

I second (and third!) the recommendation for Erica’s grammar book - it’s awesome!

She’s just written a CR book as well - The Critical Reader - and it is equally amazing. She breaks down exactly how to answer all the different questions types and how to analyze the passage. It’s incredibly thorough. Best for motivated students wanting to score in the high 600s-800 range.

I really like SAT Grammar Crammer by Christian Heath. It’s an awesome book and really helped me a lot. Check dat out!

Hey, I just have to say, this is Christian, the author of that “SAT Grammar Crammar!”

I’m so dang happy that you found the book useful. Actually, I created an account on College Confidential just to say thank you!! It’s so amazing to see your own book being recommended online! (I mean, I just turned 26 years old so I still feel pretty young…)

Is it ok if I provide a link to what he’s talking about? He means this e-Book here:
[Grammar Rules in the SAT Writing Section (e-Book) - eSAT Prep Tips.com](Top 12 SAT Writing Grammar Rules - eSAT Prep Tips.com)

I wanted to include a link because it’s really not a big-deal production, just my independent take on the SAT Writing section after a few years of teaching it and multiple 800s.

Actually I say the “Writing” section but this e-book technically only deals with the grammar multiple choice questions.

Also, I called it a “Crammer” because it doesn’t cover every, single, little detail of the test, but tries to identify your top, most-important weaknesses and fix those.

Like, idioms aren’t covered, for example, because I considered it too high-level and time-consuming for points returned.

However, subject-verb, parallelism, pronoun use, modifiers, comma splices etc are pretty heavily covered since these make up a huge, predictable part of the Writing test.

I wrote them for myself and my private students, originally! Just to give us more focused practice on specific common topics. Eventually I turned them into a book with explanatory chapters. Really hope ya’ll find it useful.

Let me also add my own “indispensable” selection of books:

Direct Hits Volume 1
Brian Leaf’s Math (Top 50 skills)
Erica Meltzer’s Grammar book
The official SAT Study Guide (obviously)

I may not use each of these books every single lesson any more, but they are what taught ME to be a professional when it came to consistently scoring 2400s on the SAT.

Don’t forget to always have a FREE-READING book you enjoy and that develops your reading skills.

There are no secrets. or… hard work and diligent focus is the “secret”!

definitely Dr. Chung and Mike’s SAT Math!

This site. Raised my score from a 173 PSAT to 2150 SAT.

So… thanks college confidential. You rock
