@bigfandave if he is sick that day, he either has to take it on a makeup day or take it as a senior with all of the juniors the following April. I was hoping to use the sickness card. The SAT is a new state requirement this year (Illinois). In the past, there was always some exam that was required in order to graduate. In the past it was the Prairie State Exam, then PARCC (I forget what that stands for), then the ACT and now the SAT.
Have him take it as a senior with all the juniors the following April - by then he’ll have his CMU decision. With a 1600 there is nowhere else to go but DOWN.
In MN the public schools are required to offer ACT but if you have an ACT or SAT on file already you are off the hook. Are you sure IL is mandatory for the STUDENT to take it in-school (as opposed to the district offering it)? I had to check our state law on this issue in order to advocate for my daughter who didn’t want to take the ACT and already had an SAT on file with her HS counselor.
Illinois requires students to take the SAT on the state applicable date for it regardless of whether the student has another SAT test already. There are currently more than 20 states that have a state test day for either the SAT or ACT that differs from the national test days. The states are using the results of those tests to establish compliance with Federal no-child-left behind laws. Whether showing that you have already taken the test can excuse abscence depends on state. Calling off sick cannot work at some them because they have make-up days.
Boo. I’d have a word with the GC. Have them help you put it off till after the CMU app. is in.
UCs have dropped their all scores requirement. The applicable website page now merely “encourages” but does not require sending all SAT scores http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/examination-requirement/index.html. That now leaves six colleges with an all scores requirement: Georgetown (for all SAT, ACTs and subjects tests), Yale (for all SATs or ACTs, or all of both if decide to send both, but score choice accepted for subject tests), Carnegie Mellon (same as Yale), Barnard (for either all SATs or all ACTs), Cornell (for all ACTs if you choose to submit ACT, but score choice accepted for SATs and subject tests), and Syracuse (for all SAT scores)
@jbstillflying @drusba @bigfandave @DREAMBIG55 Adding to the Illinois mandated junior year SAT test info — there are designated make-up days, but sitting for the test is required to not only graduate, but also to move on to 12th grade, so postponing it until post-CMU application strategy won’t work. The rules are pretty onerous.
@Mwfan1921 - Does the mandated SAT show up on your College Board account? I guess if yes, the next question would be “when?”
The state mandated test is just like any other SAT test administration…students find out the score thru their collegeboard account in 4-6 weeks. For some students this will be the only SAT/ACT test they take, as it’s free, and typically administered in spring of junior year on a school day.
@drusba do you know when the UC website changed? was it mid january? I just notice that a few days ago. thanks
^I saw it January 13. The last time I had looked at that page was early December and it had not been changed yet, but I do not know the actual date in between when it was changed.
@drusba messaged you tonight. Thanks
Hello all. Do students have to submit all SAT/ACT scores for schools that require all scores even if the test was taken in middle school? (Some summer programs require these tests for application process). Thanks.
^The small number of colleges that require all scores do not require any tests taken in 8th grade or before. Moreover, even if you send such test scores, those colleges (and other colleges) will not use them for determining admission.
Tests taken before high school doesn’t account, I believe.
For UC: “We do not require results of tests taken for the purpose of talent programs in middle or junior high school (e.g., Johns Hopkins Center for Talent Youth, Duke University’s Talent Identification Program, UC Berkeley’s Academic Talent and Development Program, etc.). Those test scores do not have to be sent to us.”
^Repeating something said before. Early this year, the UCs did away with the all scores requirement and thus you can now exercise score choice and withhold whatever tests you want to withhold.
@drusba I came across something the other day and wondered whether this part of the website was not updated yet https://admissions.berkeley.edu/documentation re: SAT “In the College Board’s Score Choice module, ensure that all scores are sent to UC. We require all scores and will use the highest scores from a single administration.” Thoughts? Is this just old? Is it possible for UCB to have requirements that go beyond the “encourage” for all UCs here http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/examination-requirement/index.html ?
@evergreen5, the app info that is provided for all UCs on the admissions pathways site is current and applies to all UCs, see http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/examination-requirement/index.html which was changed early this year to remove the requirement to send all scores to one that just “encourages” sending all scores.
That page you are looking at for Berkeley has said the same thing for several years. A problem with the UCs is that the particular colleges often do not update their separate sites annually like that which is done to the pathways site applicable to all UCs. Moreover, Berkley is particularly interesting because, for at least the last two years, when one actually contacted Berkley admissions asking if all scores were needed, they were usually told you can send whatever scores you want to send and withhold others.
Re: Syracuse, all I can find is the FAQ that says “Yes, Syracuse superscores both the SAT and ACT. If you’ve taken either test multiple times, be sure to send scores from each test date.” I would not have interpreted that as an all-scores requirement - wondering whether that’s all there is and whether the requirement was dropped.
@evergreen5, see the following page on Syracuse’s site that specifically says all scores are required https://www.syracuse.edu/admissions/undergraduate/apply/what-we-look-for/ That is an older page and my guess is Syracuse may no longer actually require all scores, but it has not taken that page down. The problem I have had is that I sent a letter to Syracuse some months ago asking it whether it actually requires all scores and received no response.
