My 2 cents / waitlists & revisits (short version!)

First of all, congratulations to those who have been accepted whether it be your first choice or not. Hang in there for those who have been placed on waiting lists. Believe it or not there is a method in the madness to the admission process. For those who did not get in anywhere's, you must understand that no matter how much the rejection hurts that it in no way reflects on your capabilities and achievements as an individual. I have no perfect words or antidote for the anguish felt, it just wasn't the year. For what it's worth, I know a boy who didn't make it in anywhere's a few years ago, he's now at Middlebury, not so bad in my book.

Here's my 2 cents:

The boarding school admission teams are still working very hard in putting the incoming Fall 2011 classes together. The tables have now turned 180 degrees and the admission teams are now working extra hard for those who have been accepted to embrace them. In most cases, until they get a clearer picture of what they've got will they move to their waitlists. There are those instances and I apologize if this is unproductive to say in falsely getting hopes up this early, where the schools utilize the waitlist well before the April 10th commitment date. I suggest treading lightly for now in going after the AO, write the letter if need be but I would recommend in not calling. After April 10th the schools may or may not go to their waitlist. The admission teams don't rush and are methodical when it comes to the waitlist. They do want the incoming classes confirmed soon as possible. It's tough for them as the anticipation will be for you. There is no easy quick way to closure and patience and fortitude will have to prevail.

For those that already have made a decision then by all means let the schools know. Otherwise, attend the revisits, soak it all in and do your best of really envisioning your self there for the next 4/3/2 years. Talk to the student that will be assigned to you and pick their brains. What was once your first choice can change after revisits. Try to forego the name recognition and go with your gut. Enjoy the journey and good luck.

Great post, ops. I’m sure you’ve helped many here as they negotiate the process.
