My ACT score went down!

I took the ACT last spring without doing any preparing whatsoever. I got a 29 composite score: 34 English, 33 Reading, 24 Math, and 23 Science. So seeing as science and math were the areas I obviously needed to improve on, I got an ACT study book and took some practice science and math tests.

So after having studied, I took the ACT again. This time my composite was 28! My math and English had stayed the same, my science had only gone up by one, and my reading dropped three points. What am I doing wrong? I thought for sure I'd get a higher score. Does anyone have any good study tips for when I take it again?

Well since you got English and Reading secured, my best advice is to brush up on your Math skills. You are likely losing easy points over not knowing how to do certain math problems, not utilizing certain equations and techniques, or even making simple mistakes on problems you know how to do. To be honest, the math in ACT is fairly simple, and there’s no excuse in getting a high score on that. You can improve on this section very easily; work on it first.

For science: treat it as if it was the Reading section. Besides the tables of information, graphs, diagrams, and passages provided, you just only need to hunt down the information to answer the questions.

im in the same boat, but you got higher than me. :(

i will use barron’s book, because if you want 32+ it makes more sense to work harder

My score dropped 3 points after I studied for endless hours! I don’t know what to do!
