I just recently received my ACT scores from the latest test, and I don't feel too proud about them. I am not the boastful, I-deserve-better-because-I-am-a-genius type. I just want to stand out to colleges and receive handsome scholarships.

My ACT stats:
Math:28
English:32
Science: 25
Reading: 28
Writing/English: 30

Composite: 28 Essay: 9
Any tips? Criticisms?

It looks like science is your weakest section. That’s pretty common: a lot of people struggle with science because they don’t understand the format. Buy an ACT test prep book (I recommend the one the Princeton Review puts out) and read the science section; it will help a LOT in becoming more comfortable with the test. The other nice thing about the books is that they have practice tests to do, so you can become more familiar with answering the questions in a test-style environment. Good luck!!

I don’t have to tell you this, but if that’s your real ACT score, that is amazing. Looks like my English score is the only one that’s comparable to yours. I hope to perform better. What score should I strive for or be satisfied with? Don’t say 36, please. I will strive for it, but that is not so realistic.

Yep, make sure you get the red book for the ACT. Take all the practice tests. For english, make flashcards of the mistakes you get wrong. The english section is extremely predictable and the same errors commonly pop up throughout different tests. Also just hella lurk through the ACT forum on CC and maybe research a bit on tactics or tips/strategies online. There are a bunch of good sources here on CC and on google. Oh and for reading just keep practicing with reading sections- read fast and be interested. That’s important-> If you’re interested you remember things better. Treat the passages as little anecdotes (because that’s what they really are) and just enjoy the reading. You’ll be able to answer the questions faster and more accurately. Science you got to find your own jig. I try reading the questions first and then find the answers because otherwise I can’t really finish on time. For the scientist passages though I would read/skim the passages first. Math is just math.

I just want to know the opinions of others: Do you think that a score of 28 shows somewhat incompetent, or not-so-smart, student? Do you actually believe that study can make most students score 30+?

A 28 is in the 90th percentile. It’s GREAT.

It would be nice if the 90 percent was how much of my tuition scholarships would cover. Too bad a 28 isn’t the most lucrative score, right?

I started with a 28 in science, told myself to focus more during the test, and got a 36.

In terms of earning scholarships, it depends on the school. Some schools like ualabama give out full rides automatically for High act + gpa, while it will just make you more competitive at others. Aim for a 31+ for decent shot at $$. Btw. My first practice act test, I got a 29. Goodluck!

" Do you actually believe that study can make most students score 30+?"

If that is true, what is the point? What is the point of having a test in which anyone can achieve a " scholarship" score? To reward those willing to study enough to achieve a certain test score? Why?
